A week after teasing its next New Balance collaboration, Italian luxury brand Stone Island has unveiled a New Balance 998 releasing in March. While the brand’s teasers hinted at another performance capsule, the sneaker is question comes as a luxe, performance-minded take on running-turned-lifestyle model.
Stone Island is known for its use of technical materials, and that’s exactly what we see here. The base layer is crafted from polyurethane-coated cotton canvas, taking inspiration from the brand’s archival, military-inspired Raso Gommato fabric from 1984. Nubuck overlays complement the maroon base, aligning well with Stone Island’s gritty, utilitarian design language. Reflective treatments settle on the New Balance logo and backtab, while Stone Island’s iconic compass logo is stitched onto a nylon tongue. Underfoot, the sneaker is complete with a khaki midsole and translucent outsole reading “Stone Island Product Research.”
This marks the first ever “Made In USA” New Balance sneaker by the Italian luxury brand, arriving after “Made In UK” New Balance 991v2 collaborations in 2023 and 2024. We’re still anticipating Stone Island x New Balance performance wear in 2025, but no concrete details have been floated at the time of this writing.
Back to the sneaker at hand, the Stone Island New Balance 998 retails for $285 and drops March 27th exclusively via Stone Island. Interested buyers must have a Stone Island account and sign up for the release event through their account portal. Tap here to sign up.
