Matt Varga With the promo push behind his original multi-color pair, current Human Made and former BAPE head Nigo stamped that his Nike collection would take significant cues from the media that influenced him in his adolescence. After oding that aforementioned shoe to the seminal “Super Sensei” series and its retrofuturistic ilk, the multi-disciplinarian is returning to one of his previously established touchstones for the Nigo Air Force 3 “Ape-Force.”
In case you aren’t clued in, the Planet of the Apes franchise has long been a favorite of Nigo, famously inspiring the art direction and name of BAPE in its heyday. The primates are the inspiration for the hairy suede and corduroy that defines this latest look, also lending rich “Baroque Brown,” “Hemp,” and “Pecan” hues in the process. Lush “Fir” tonality helps round out the arrangement, taken from the rainforest environs that the iconic films are typically set in.
While official images of this pair are the main draw for our purposes, Nike and Nigo are continuing some exceptional promotion alongside the new shots. A short clip echoing toy advertisements from the 1980s appeared on Swoosh social channels, complete with a booming narrative voice and mini figures of Nigo and some Planet of the Apes-inspired characters with non-copyright-infringing names. It’s unclear whether the “shoes and action figures sold separately” claim in the ad is earnest or just another nod to that 1980s era. However, select early looks at the figures preceding this ad may mean you can actually get your hands on the toys shown.
