Long known for their movie-minded attitude towards sneaker collabs, Extra Butter is linking up with adidas to bring turn-of-the-century Japanese cinema to the adidas Consortium Cup Rivalry.
The ties to the cult-classic action film run deep on the sneaker, but first and foremost influence the palette of the shoe. The khaki and ecru shades are ripped from the schoolkids’ uniforms in the movie, with suit jacket tan hitting the leather overlays of the shoe and peeking out under the more distressed pieces at play. Further, “Antique White” hits the midsole, an embrace of vintage-chic broadly but a thematic tie in the context of this collaboration.
Outside of taking their colorway form the film, the structural elements of the shoe are meant to display genuine war scars. it starts with cracked leather on the Three Stripes branding and extends to exposing stitching on the medial side, intended to evoke a hasty repair job done in the heat of battle.
Zooming all the way out, the sneaker is intended to mirror the “chaos of the film,” taking place in a typically upper-crust setting and bringing havoc to “a life of luxury.” As you may be able to tell from the model name here, the collab brings together two separate adidas silhouettes, bringing a chunky Rivalry sole to a classic Samba Consortium Cup body.
Spanning a full size run from 4-14, the collaborative pair retails for $140. The raffle for the Extra Butter adidas Consortium Cup Rivalry is active now on extrabutter.com, with entries closing tomorrow afternoon. They will release at both NYC locations and the website next Friday, February 23rd, with a global launch set to follow on the 28th. Scroll down for an official look straight from Extra Butter themselves.
In another upcoming release, the adidas Harden Vol. 8 “Sculpt” shapes up for its first drop just around the corner.
