The Nike Air Huarache Runner expands a legacy founded in 1991.
After the success of several revolutionary Nike Running products, Tinker Hatfield set out to refresh the brand’s non-Air Max solutions. Inspired by water skiing gear, the legendary sneaker architect brought stretch neoprene material to the performance-running space, creating the iconic Nike Air Huarache. Marketed with “Have You Hugged Your Foot Today?” slogans, the silhouette offered ultra-secure lockdown and a future-thinking aesthetic (going up half-a-size is recommended!).
Nike’s Air Huarache Runner takes Hatfield’s blueprint and updates it through the lens of a modern-day performance model. While it’s not recommended to do any serious running in the sneaker – for that, there’s the AlphaFly 3 – the pair delivers a comfortable ride for lifestyle use. The heel cage has been updated with sleeker design cues than the original, but still deliver a futuristic look. Mesh, suede, and leather materials come together throughout the upper to deliver a much more breathable arrangement that also nods to the busyness of retro runners.
Although the latest Nike Air Huarache option draws inspiration from performance models, it’s not the Swoosh’s first time updating the sneaker through a modern-day running lens. Throughout the early 2010s, handfuls of Huaraches appeared with Nike Free sole units. The model didn’t quite resonate with audiences as its predecessor from ’91 did, but it demonstrated the brand’s ability to mix heritage and new technology.
Enjoy official photos of the “Midnight Navy” pair ahead, as you wait for a nike.com launch. The Air Huarache Runner is priced at $140 USD.
