Updated July 26, 2024: This guide to the best women’s cowboy boots was updated with new product releases and outfit ideas to wear from summer to fall.
Giddy up, cowgirls — Western wear is trending in a big way. Whether you’re saddling up, kicking up dust, or square dancing through city streets, the best cowboy boots for women were made for more than walking, and add instant flair to any look.
2024 is certainly the year of the cowgirl, and if we retrace our steps, there were plenty of signs it was on the way. Mass cultural moments like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s blockbusting tours certainly played a hand in influencing city slickers to slip into rough-and-tumble point-toe boots, alongside other music movements like Kacey Musgrave’s album drop in March, and Lana Del Rey’s highly anticipated country-inspired album that’s slated to drop this fall. In fact, Beyoncé sparked searches early this year for ‘cowboy boots’ by 163 percent, according to a Boohoo report, while the term “Serving Cowboy Core” has racked up over 161 million views and searches on TikTok to date — yeehaw!
There’s no better time get your cowboy boots in a row, especially as fall (a.k.a peak boot season) approaches. Street style stars have been serving up tons of inspo all summer, too, from Emily Ratajowski to Sydney Sweeney, so if you’re not ready to put away your cute summer sandals quite yet, there are plenty of ways to sport the trendy Western boot before Labor Day. Bella Hadid, for one, has taken up competitive horse riding in her spare time, so her recent New York City street style is a natural mix of her high-styled roots with her cowgirl daydream — proving that just the additional of a cowboy boot can shift the entire personality of an ensemble.

The best cowboy boots always prioritize quality and function over fashion, which is good news because they’ll last as a lifelong investment. Brands like Tecovas, Boot Barn, Dingo, and Durango have perfected the style for real-life cowgirls who get down and dirty, while popular footwear brands like Steve Madden, Dolce Vita, Schutz, and Jeffrey Campbell have leaned into Western influences, with modern iterations of the beloved boots. That leaves you with many cowboy boot options to choose from, whether it’s classic Western block heels, rubber-soled boots that tread any terrain, or sleek stilettos — as well as ankle boot styles and high-calf cowboy boots.
Elizabeth Ruiz, women’s senior footwear designer at Tecovas, recommends considering these essential questions when you’re choosing the best cowboy boots: “Are [these boots] made by craftsmen who understand the techniques, design, and construction of authentic boots?” She stresses that, “fine leathers will stand the test of time in both durability and style, where leathers should be properly processed, not painted and corrected.” Look for thoughtful details like leather lining, ergonomic pull tabs, and unique stitch patterns. And always pay attention to the fit. “Women’s Western boots do not have zippers or laces,” she notes, “which necessitates that the consumer understand what to expect when they try on boots.” This means there are few opportunities for adjustments, and you should opt for a shoe that is supportive of your foot type.
To ensure you have the right fit, fashion stylist Audree López recommends paying attention to your toes. “You should be able to wiggle your toes, the shoe should feel snug on the widest part of your foot, and your heel should hit the back of the shoe without slipping out while you walk,” she says. You can expect leather to naturally soften while breaking them in, but if they are tight, go up a half size or look for a brand that offers a wider foot option. If you want a roomier toe box, she suggests opting for a round or square toe versus a pointed boot. It’s also important to choose a style with added footbed cushioning, especially for those with plantar fasciitis or flat feet, while flats and block heels will offer more stability support for walking or standing all day.
From the runways to fashion week street style and the hottest TikTok style trends, Western wear is everywhere. Whether you’re heading to a concert or are simply excited to saddle up to the trend, you’ll be glad to have a pair of cowboy boots (or two) in your rotation.
Editors’ Choice: Top 3 Cowboy Boots for Women of 2024
There’s an influx of new cowboy boots to choose from in 2024, and FN Shop editors have been trotting around town to test new releases, bestsellers, and re-assessing longtime favorites to lasso up our top list for the season ahead. Since there are so many silhouettes and construction variations of the style to choose from, we’re spotlighting three cowboy boot styles that are most versatile and supportive at the range of price points.
After a second round of testing, our updated Editors’ Choice selections for cowboy boots for women were rated based on a checklist of essential criteria, including durable construction, reliable comfort, authentic Western design, and overall versatility — so whether you’re heading to the rodeo or stomping the concrete runway, you can rest assured that your new boots will ride like the wind.
- Tecovas The Annie Boots: As a one of the most quintessential, investment-worthy cowboy boot options on the market, we love this Tecovas style for its authentic Western design and unparalleled comfort. Made of luxe leather, the soft structured cowboy boots feature a classic snip-toes and low-profile heels. Premium details like hand-cording and pull tabs makes this a traditional option, whether or not it’s your first rodeo when it comes Western footwear.
- Durango Crush Cowboy Boots: If you’re looking for a stylish statement that goes beyond typical cowboy boot design, look to this head-turning pair from Durango. The brand’s enduring cowboy boot craftsmanship shines in this style, with genuine leather, cowboy-approved construction, and modern adornments that bring femininity to the forefront. With sweet, heart-shaped conchos and harness strapping, antiqued leather, and cushioned insoles, these essential boots are a top choice for their marriage of style and comfort.
- Roper Riley Western Boots: Looking for budget-friendly cowboy boots? We recommend Roper as one of the most affordable cowboy boots for women — but they don’t skimp on quality, comfort, and genuine design. Recommended by a style expert, the boots boast padded insole cushioning, and durable, rubber outsoles, along with a wide selection of colorways to choose from.
Colorways: Cafe, white, black, red, blue, navy, and more
Materials: Leather
Additional features: 14″ shaft, 2″ heel. 1/2″ platform; Snip toe, tonal stitching
Featuring authentic elements like a classic snip toe and all-over tonal stitching, these steppers are available in a wide range of color options to suit your style. It’s the brand’s bestselling boot, and comes editor-approved, with a deep scallop upper that aids in a soft fit and flattering shape, as well as highly durable leather soles that’ll keep you galloping in comfort and style, from the supermarket to the rodeo.
Editor testing and review notes: “I was looking for a cowboy boot that could fit into my wardrobe but retain a level of quality, and was recommended Tecovas by Texan cousin. I ordered the Annie as it’s a bit taller, and I wanted to be able to wear them with cutoffs in the summer and slim-cut jeans in the fall. They’re honestly great. I also got the Tecovas boot socks, which are ideal for wearing with the Annie style — they’re thick and sturdy, and even on my first wear, I didn’t experience blisters. I’d flag the first few wears as snug, though the boots gradually mold to your feet. Overall, I’d recommend them for anyone who is wearing them for riding or walking around.”
What testers say: “My favorite pair of boots! I love the color and they are the most comfortable boots!”
Price upon publish date of this article: $295
Size range: 6 to 10
Colorways: Brown and black
Materials: Full-grain leather upper
Additional features: 2″ heel, 11″ shaft; Cushioned insole, removable harness strap, pull-on design
Editor testing and review notes: “Are these not the cutest cowboy boots you’ve ever seen? I’m obsessed with all the thoughtful details (I discover more the longer I look) and love that they feel like a true Western style with a little more personality. I grab for them when I’m looking for a little extra flair in my typical workwear or lazy weekend outfits — whether peeking out of the hem of my favorite baggy jeans or under a long, flowing linen skirt. Because of the narrow point-toe, I recommend opting for a half size up, especially if you have flat feet that lean wide like me. Overall, the low heel makes them so easy for daily wear, and I’m free to strut the city streets without any signs of discomfort from painful rubbing or strain on my heels.”
What testers say: “These boots can be worn for all occasions, dressed up or down. Classy and chic for dancing and wearing around town! Wear them with jeans in or out, short or long dresses, and shorts. They are made of quality material and are well constructed. My second time wearing them I danced for four hours without any problems. I usually wear shoe size 8.5 or 9. The boots I bought in size 9 and they are a perfect fit with a pair of socks. These boots are fun to wear.”

Editor testing and review notes: “Trust me, you’ll be shocked at how high-quality these feel when you first slip them on — so much that you may be tempted to pick up another pair. I love how easy these are to style, as they simply feature classic Western contrast stitching, and opt out of all the bells and whistles. The synthetic leather construction is strong without feeling stiff, and even holds up when I’m caught in the rain. The footbed cushioning is this boot’s star feature, accounting for complete comfort and durability in an affordable, authentic design.”
What testers say: “I ordered these in my usual size — they fit perfectly and true to size! I read multiple reviews before purchasing stating how comfortable these boots were, but I honestly didn’t believe they would be this comfortable. I’ve worn these to a July 4th barbecue party, shopping outside at an outlet mall, and to the park chasing around my nieces, and they’ve been incredibly comfortable on my feet. I’ve gotten tons of compliments on these boots, too! I’m going to order another pair in black.”

My feet are normal/medium width and a solid size 8.5/39 Euro. I always see Frye boots I want to try but I’ve stayed away in the past based on the reviews that say they are made for people with narrow feet. I decided to take a chance on these little gems because they were just too beautiful to pass up. The length was spot-on and the arch support was amazing. I took the plunge and wore them to work the next day and they felt good all day. I work in an office setting so I’m not on my feet constantly but I move around quite a bit and I took a leisurely walk on my lunch break. I think they will only get more beautiful and comfortable with age and I plan to wear them frequently and for a long time.”

What testers say: “I’m so happy with these! I legitimately get asked about these boots everywhere I go. People stop me all the time to ask where I got them! The quality is what I’d expect for the price, and the design is so unique. The stitching at the top of the foot being embroidered playing card suits is SO fun, and such a great little detail. Love them!”

What testers say: “I ABSOLUTLEY LOVE THEM! The fabric is light enought for this boot to be an all-year boot. Dress it up or down — its a winner! I normally wear an 8.5, but in SM shoes or boots an 8 fits best, as the 8.5 is too big!”

What testers say: “I’ve never owned a pair of cowboy boots before, but I must say, these are absolutely beautiful. The quality is very high end. I went a half size up, and I am glad I did. I bought these for a country chic wedding and I am super excited to wear them!”

The Casanova boots come in six stylish shades, including basics like black and tan, plus trendy hues like Barbiecore pink. This style is fitted with Ariat’s Advanced Torque Technology, or ATS, which offers support and stability while wearing. The leather lining and outsole require some breaking in, but afterwards, the fit feels like butter. Their rustic, stylish look is great for true cowgirls and fashion girls alike. Slip them on with a pair of skinny jeans or flash them under under a black, pleated midi skirt.
What testers say: “My most comfortable pair of cowboy boots are Ariats, so I went to the website to look for black boots. The Casanova boots are perfect — they are dressy but easy to walk in and I receive compliments every time I wear them! They were comfy out of the box, and I wore them all day at work before wearing them in the show ring to make sure they were comfortable and easy to walk in. They come up just below my knee, and don’t fit under my boot cut jeans.”

The calf room isn’t the only feature that earned this style a spot on the list. It also offers two different foot width sizes: medium and wide width Western boots, so wider feet can wear them without getting squished. López’s sister recently bought a pair for an upcoming concert. “She sized up a half size with C width,” she explains, “Plus, they come in with a removable cushioning insole. She wore them all day with no blisters and walked an hour home after the concert. She hasn’t stopped raving about these.”
What testers say: “I am in between a standard size calf and a wide calf. Typically wide is too big and standard is just too tight; these are perfect. And they have plenty of stretch if you have a bigger calf.

The History of Women’s Cowboy Boots
Though women’s Western boots may be currently trending, this isn’t their first rodeo. The style first came to the US in the 1800s, inspired by the Spanish vaquero boot. In 1951, Western boots had their first major fashion moment, with Marilyn Monroe wearing a pair with hot pants in a Valentine’s Day promotional shot. Ralph Lauren shows in the ’70s featured cowboy boots, kicking off years of runways full of models sporting the footwear.
In 1989, Western boots went worldwide. Princess Diana was seen wearing sweatpants tucked into cowboy boots while dropping Prince Harry off at school. In 1997, Alexander McQueen designed a collection for Givenchy featuring leather cutout women’s Western boots. During the early 2000s, cowboy boots made their way onto the celebrity circuit. Britney Spears wore them to the 2003 Kids Choice Awards, Sienna Miller wore them to a movie premiere in 2004, and Selena Gomez sported a pair while running errands around LA. Always two steps ahead of the trends, Rihanna wore silver metallic cowboy boots on a red carpet in 2005, and Taylor Swift, famously known for her country star roots, naturally wore them throughout her 2011 Speak Now tour.
Since then, fashion’s love affair has only grown. They showed throughout the 2010s at Anna Sui, Dolce and Gabbana, Michael Kors, and more. Soon thereafter, Western boots became the go-to festival shoe, and became a certified street style staple by the early 2020s, worn by the likes of Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Chrissy Teigen, Rita Ora, and more.
Women’s Western Boot Trend for 2024
Ranch-ready footwear has been a slow burn throughout recent seasons, and it’s beginning to shine bright among celebrity style and spring trends for 2024. The theme-y shoe whispered across the runways at Paco Rabanne and Prabal Gurung for 2020, in this season’s red-hot color trend, and was reintroduced for 2021 at Isabel Marant for 2021, when the label sent a slew of cowboy boot silhouettes down the runway in every color of the rainbow. Chloé also presented rubbery cowboy boots in buttery-smooth leather, styled alongside chic “quiet luxury” workwear for fall 2022, hinting toward more wearable iterations of the shoe to come.
More recently, we saw Ganni, a brand that boasts a bestseller in the category, show boots for spring 2024 in structured silver and slouchy stone silhouettes, whether with tucked-in jeans or peaking out of long, flowing trousers. And then there’s Louis Vuitton, which went all-out Western ahead of fall 2024, from turquoise-adorned bolo ties, saddle handbags, rope holster accessories, and washed leather cowboy boots.
It’s hard to spot a style star who isn’t embracing the cowboy boot trend. Beyoncé, who’s finally entered her consummate cowgirl era, wore a 10-gallon hat at the 2024 Grammys, stunned in Western-inspired Moschino mules, and, we can only image, will be stomping around in chrome-plated cowboy boots throughout her entire “Renaissance: Act II” run. Lana Del Rey was also recently spotted in black Western boots, paired with a baby blue quilted Chanel purse, while Bella Hadid has been embracing her inner “horse girl” in brown and black trotters and worn-in denim at her Pennsylvania ranch. But, if you’re looking for a masterclass in city-slicker cowboy boot styling, look to Emily Ratajkowski, who’s constantly seen wearing her cowboy boot rotation around New York City — teaming the boots with a sophisticated blazer, leather jacket, slip dress, puffer jacket, midi skirt, and practically everything in between.
We’d be remiss to gloss over the treasure trove of style inspiration seen on the streets of this season’s fashion weeks, too. Cowboy boots proved as one of the most consistent outfit-making pieces among show-goers, offering instant personality to the range of chic and eclectic ensembles. We saw guests make the case that a cowboy boot can seamlessly pair with a sequin dress, or that it can actually look sporty with keen styling.
How To Wear Women’s Western Boots: Cowboy Boots Outfit Ideas
- Start small: When you first come across an exciting trend, it is easy to get carried away. López encourages you to make it your own rather than copying someone else. “With any new trend, I always recommend starting simple,” she says, “Is your comfort zone a tank top and slip skirt? Great! Start there and add a belt or a chunky necklace, and let your cowboy boot take the place of your favorite sneaker, combat boot, or ankle boot.”
- Make the boot the fashion focal point: If you just got a bold colored boot but don’t know how to wear it, pay attention. Lee suggests making your metallic or colorful women’s Western boots a bold accent to your look. Keep your outfit monochromatic, and make the boot the star of the show.
- Use a tried-and-true formula: You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. When in doubt, do something that works, like teaming Western boots with classic denim. López loves pairing a boot with skinny, slim, straight, or women’s jeans. “The straight and tapered leg will give you that current fashion girl or model off duty outfit,” she says.
What to Look for in the Best Cowboy Boots for Women
- Material: For the most part, women’s Western boots come in three materials: leather, suede, and synthetics. In terms of quality, the real thing is always better. “Avoid pleather, synthetic materials like polyurethane, polyester or rubber,” says López, “These materials are cheap and will break down quickly over time. They also will not give your feet the support and comfortability versus a leather material.” Suede and leather are literally cut from the same cloth, but there are real differences between the two. First off, suede is generally more comfortable but not as durable. On the other hand, leather takes much longer to break in, but it can withstand much more. “Cowhide leather is a great option [for boots],” explains Lee. “It’s super durable and develops a cool patina over time with wear. Suede, with its soft and textured look, offers greater comfort than leather. But keep in mind that suede boots need a little extra care to maintain their best appearance.”
- Style: The perfect pair of women’s Western boots blend both style and function. Whether it’s the fabric, embroidery, heel height, or silhouette, each element of the boot can match your personal aesthetic. There’s the color to ponder, too — you can find red Western boots, pink women’s Western boots, and of course, classic black and brown options. If you’re intimidated, Lopez suggests starting small. “You don’t have to dress like you walked off the ranch or you’re cosplaying as Kendall Jenner,” she says. “Instead, start simple with a neutral boot or add them with your comfort zone go-to outfits and go from there.”
- Heel and shaft height: All Western boots have some kind of heel spanning almost all heights. Most commonly, cowboy boot heels are somewhere between one to two inches. Before committing to a cowboy boot, think about what you are buying them for. “Consider your comfort level and personal preference when determining optimal heel height,” Lee recommends. “The sturdy heel found in most cowboy boots makes even higher-heeled options surprisingly comfortable to wear.” The shaft of the boot also varies. Shorter shafts are generally more comfortable and eliminate the task of fitting the boot to your calves (they’re also ideal for those who want a pair of the best women’s cowboy boots for petites). Longer shafts offer more protection, but women’s tall Western boots can be harder to fit.
Different Types of Cowboy Boots for Women
- Traditional western boots: Traditional women’s Western boots have longer shafts and higher heels, because they were originally designed to make it easier to ride horses. Knee-high boots with a two-inch heel are usually considered traditional boots.
- Ropers: Roper boots are also super common, but they are not exactly the same as traditional cowboy boots. They are meant to ride horses but also to walk around. They typically have a shorter shaft for more flexibility around the ankle and a wider toe for added comfort.
- Western dress boots: Dress boots are more formal than traditional boots. They usually have elevated materials like a glossy leather or more intricate embroidery appropriate for fancier occasions.
- Platform Western boots: Platform cowboy boots are a modern take on a classic style. Instead of leaving all the height to the heel, these boots have, well, a platform. Unlike the boots above, these were never intended to be work boots. Their intentions are purely style centered.
- Kitten heel platform boots: This style of boot is the most modern take possible on a Western boot. The kitten heel isn’t the same shape, but it is a similar height. The toe is usually squared, but it also can be rounded or pointed.
