Updated June 10, 2024: This guide to the most comfortable wedges for women was updated with new releases for summer, along with Editor’s Choice recommendations for the top three pairs according to testing, and additional information on wedge sandal trends.
Table Of Contents
In the sunny months, you may find yourself stuck deciding between slipping on cute summer sandals or a tall stiletto heel as you attend weddings, backyard parties, or embark on exciting getaways. Comfortable wedge sandals are an essential silhouette to include in your shoe rotation because they thrive at the intersection of supportive footwear and a high-stacked style — so you don’t need to sacrifice on inches, fashion, or essential comfort.
“In a wedge, the heel is elevated, but the outsole is a continuous solid platform which allows for increased ankle stability and even weight distribution,” explains Silicon Valley-based podiatrist Najwa Javed. “Most people prefer wedges for exhibitions, weddings, and vacations because you get that graceful elongated leg without the pain of traditional heels.” Plus, you won’t find yourself sinking into outdoor surfaces like grass, sand, or cobblestone while you’re enjoying your fun in the sun.
Watch on FN
While you’re likely familiar with the traditional typical cork or raffia walking sandals, new releases for summer 2024 are presenting a slew of fresh silhouettes, textures, and strap styles that recontextualize the shoe through contemporary trends.
Last season, wedge sandals emerged as an unexpected breakout trend for fall, as seen on the runways in inverted block heels, modern platforms, and architectural curves, courtesy of Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Dior, Alaïa, Ferragamo, and Khaite. At Chloé’s fall 2024 show, the wedge sandal was seen on nearly every tastemaker sitting front row, solidifying the boho-chic trend for the season ahead. Moral of the story? Forget whatever outdated, early-aughts image pops into your head when you think of wedge sandals, because the comfortable style is officially back — and better than ever.
There are so many different kinds of comfortable wedge sandals to shop this season — from classic raffia-heeled sandals, cork-sole wedges, abstract block heels, platform sandals, and thong heels. While wedge sandals are the most comfortable heel option, not all are made the same. Wedge styles vary in height, cushioning, and fit, which is why it’s important to select one that properly supports your foot type or existing foot conditions to ensure all-day comfort.
We created this guide to the most comfortable wedge shoes to make your shoe shopping easy-breezy, with expert tips and product picks for a variety of support needs for different foot types and conditions, along with wedge sandal outfit inspiration for summer 2024.
Editor’s Choice: Top 3 Wedge Sandals of 2024
Wedge sandals are widely beloved for their ability to hit a sweet spot between fashion and function, but they can vary in a myriad of styles beyond a base of classic cork and raffia. They may appear as a stacked flatform with only a slight heel-to-toe drop or or take advantage of sole space with eye-catching architectural heel. Like any other summer sandal, wedges are also constructed from the range of durable materials, like leather, EVA foam, woven raffia, and more. Since there are so many styles to choose from, Footwear News Shop editors chose our top three recommendations for summer that deliver on reliable comfort, all-season versatility, and appeal to of-the-moment trends:
- Loeffler Randall Gaby White Pleated Bow Espadrille Sandals: Many wedge sandal styles present a platform sole to avoid steep heels, and this charming espadrille style from Loeffler Randall exemplifies the melding of organic textures with effortless wear. According to one Footwear News Shop editor, this style is a no-brainer, slip-on-and-go style you can wear for formal and casual occasions alike, as its posh chiffon uppers read elegant while the silhouette brings fuss-free comfort for hours on end. It also rings in at a comparatively affordable designer price point, with excellent craftsmanship that’ll last you many summers to come.
- Crocs Brooklyn Mid Wedge Sandals: Crocs’ Brooklyn wedge sandals deliver on everything a summer sandal should be, with a little but of extra height: Supportive comfort, breathability, and easy-to-clean, waterproof construction. You’ll never sweat your next step outdoors in these durable sandals, and their sleek, thick-strapped uppers still look chic beyond the beach or barbecue, whether paired with a summer dress or flouncy skirt.
- Reformation Enya Wedge Sandals: If you’re in the market for a more contemporary wedge silhouette, Reformation makes some of the best. The mule-style uppers on the Enya Wedge Sandals allow them to serve as a more minimal dress shoe — all while the block heels do all the talking. Rather than a typical triangular wedge, these heels jut inwards like a sculptural shark bite, similar to modern shapes we’ve seen all over the runway for summer 2024.
Colorways: White and Natural
Heel height: 2.75 inches
Materials: Leather, raffia
Special features: Adjustable buckle closure
Editor testing and review notes: “I was immediately drawn to this style, as it conjured up fantasies of summer travel or sunny brunch dates. The thicker jute braids looked especially unique against the lot of other designer silhouettes, and the thick platform sole seemed to be a more comfortable iteration of a classic wedge, rather than a steep heel-toe drop. Once I slipped my foot into the shoe, my hypothesis was proven correct. Not only did I feel stable with every stride, I was surprised to feel my feet smoothly roll forward without the high platform getting in the way. And, with a quick poke of your finger on the footbed, you’ll see that the firm cushioning bounces back for plush and responsive support, which bodes well for long hours of standing — or briskly walking down Fifth Avenue in NYC in my case.”

Editor testing and review notes: “I usually have a hard time with mule-style shoes — most of them don’t lock down my feet enough for walking around New York City. Reformation’s Enya Sandals have a thicker upper strap that actually keeps my feet secure without rubbing on the sides of my feet like similar styles tend to do. I love the unique wedge shape that adds a fun touch to my date night outfits, too.”

Platform height: 1.75 inches

Editor testing and review notes: “I don’t go a single summer without my Teva flatform sandals. As a petite person with flat feet, these are no doubt the most comfortable shoe in my year-round rotation. The cushy foam footbed keeps my strides smooth and supported — it almost feels like I’m not wearing any shoes at all, as I can’t feel the harshness of pavement or rock when I step. The adjustable straps make them super secure for walking along the coast or riding rollercoasters. Plus, they serve serious gorpcore with a winning sock pairing.”
What testers say: “I love these sandals. The straps are adjustable so you can make sure they fit just right and aren’t too loose or too tight like some other sandals. And they’re probably the most comfortable platform/flatform shoes you’ll find. I want them in all the colors.”
Price upon publish date of this article: $69.99
Heel height: 4 inches
Materials: Leather
Special features: Adjustable buckle closure
Editor testing and review notes: “I’ll be honest, I’m a sucker for anything topped with a bow. My petite stature also gives me a natural affinity for heels that dramatically boost my height — but, as a city slicker, comfort is a non-negotiable. These stunners from Alexandre Birman tick every box. Though the solid wedge heel may look hard upon first glance, the entire length of the leather sole actually comes padded with cushy-softness, while the toe is left purely lined with leather that aided in stability as I stepped, turned, and crouched low to the ground during my shoe shopping spree. I didn’t find the heel-toe drop to be too strenuous either, and I was able to achieve a true-to-size, secure fit with the adjustable ankle strap that kept my foot in place.”

The Wedge Sandal Trend for 2024
Block-heeled wedge sandals in patent leather, deep hues, metallics, and snakeskin covered major ground on fall 2023 runways — laying the groundwork for more elevated adaptations for spring and summer 2024. Bottega Veneta added sleek wedge heels to glossy mules and tall chrome boots; Ferragamo toyed with minimal buckles on inverted heels that call back to timeless Mary Jane styles; and Khaite updated the summery sandal style with architectural inverted heels, which is also seen in new designs from brands like Reformation and Cult Gaia.
The biggest driver of the summer 2024 wedge sandal resurgence is no doubt the Chloé fall 2024 runway — which also ushered in an entire new wave of modern boho-chic sensibilities. Images from the event, rather than the actual runway, went viral as the star-studded front row — namely, Sienna Miller, Georgia May Jagger, Pat Cleveland, Clemence Poesy, and Kiernan Shipka — donned a fleet of matching wedge sandals that featured super-stacked platform cork soles and smooth leather criss-cross uppers.
Additionally, Ferragamo forwarded its wedge sandal from last season for summer 2024, with tortoise shell-like angular wedge heels, straps adorned in stones, and wide ankle strapping. While wedges often evoke a beachy, relaxed attitude, new designs feel far more chic and sophisticated in line with ‘quiet luxury’ trends, as function and high fashion fuse together in abstract silhouettes, exaggerated heights, and luxe finishings, while maintaining hints of classic heel and sandal styles.
Wedge Sandal Outfit Ideas
Wedges offer a world of height matched with comfort, no matter where you take your outfit. When it comes to comfortable wedges for women, it’s not just about good looks; you also need a pair you can throw on, no matter where you’re heading or what you’re wearing. When you find the perfect everyday wedge sandal, you’ll see how it can be teamed with all outfit equations.
Wedge sandals can be styled with a linen set or a swinging sundress and a canvas tote bag for the office or sunny weekend activities. Professional settings call for cleaner lines, so look for pointed or square toes with more luxe finishings, like leather or raffa. Then style your wedges with a formal frock, such as a shirt dress, denim dress, or a breezy midi skirt. You can even pair the sandals with slouchy trousers so the accentuated heel peeks out from under.
If you have a busy roster of weddings slotted for summer, you’ll want to select a comfortable heel that can play with your entire collection of wedding guest dresses. Wedge heels and platforms offer that added boost of height and formal feel without putting you through long hours of pain — plus, they’re a stable base for walking through sand, grass, or cobblestone. Neutral colorways will be the most versatile, while elegant upper details like bows and ankle strapping bring a stylish flair for the special occasion.

The Best Wedge Sandals for Different Foot Types and Foot Conditions
Similar to when you’re looking for the most comfortable sneakers or comfortable flats, you should begin by assessing your foot type to find the most comfortable wedge sandals, Dr. Javed says. If you have any of the below foot conditions, shop accordingly.
- Wedge sandals for wide feet: “Look for soft upper materials like canvas that can stretch to accommodate the shape of the foot,” says Dr. Javed. She adds that most wedges are narrow, so consider buying a half size up if you have wide feet.
- Wedge sandals for flat feet: “Those with flat feet or fallen arches should buy shoes with a heel that’s at least one-inch tall but no more than three inches tall for optimal midfoot support,” Dr. Javed advises. She also notes that you can specifically look for wedge shoes with arch support.
- Wedge sandals for bunions: “Go for wedges with no more than two inches of heel elevation,” she says, adding that styles with soft, stretchable leather uppers are best to prevent further aggravating the bony protrusions.
- Wedge sandals for plantar fasciitis: For people with plantar fasciitis, the heel height rule is opposite. “Opt for at least two inches of heel elevation to help reduce the pull of the Achilles, which is connected to the plantar fascial band,” Dr. Javed explains.
- Wedge sandals for neuromas: “If you have a pinched nerve, make sure to buy a platform wedge to help reduce pressure in the toe box,” she says. In addition to recommending silhouettes made with stretchy canvas and leather uppers, Dr. Javed also prefers options with outsoles made of cork, a material that’s naturally shock-resistant and cushiony. “Styles with canvas or soft leather uppers and jute outsoles are the most comfortable options,” she explains.
What to Look for In Comfortable Wedge Sandals
To shop for your go-to wedge sandals for summer, there are a few factors to keep in mind that address function, comfort, and personal style.
- Material: Wedge sandals come in a variety of materials in textiles, like raffia, cotton, canvas, leather, mesh, and more. If you intend to wear wedges outdoors, look to washable materials such as canvas and cotton, or faux-leather that’s easy to wipe clean. Mesh will allow for breathability under the hot summer sun, while leather will retain heat on a cool day.
- Arch support: Arch support is an essential element to any comfortable shoe, especially if you have high arches, flat feet, or plantar fasciitis. Luckily, wedge sandals are great shoes for high arches and ample arch support, which will vary across steep heel drops, platform or flatform styles, and footbed cushioning. Brands like Naturalizer excel in this category, with myriad styles to choose from that incorporate soft EVA cushioning and built-in arch support.
- Silhouette: There are many different styles and silhouettes of wedge sandals. Similar to other heels and sandals, you’ll discover wedges with a variety of upper styles, like closed-toe, peep-toe, single straps, criss-cross strapping, thong straps, and gladiator straps. There are also several heel options to shop, from platform, flatform, slides, flip flops mules, and more.
