Update: Sept 9, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. ET:
After teasing in late August their latest link-up with New Balance, Stone Island have confirmed the details of the new collaboration today.
The Stone Island x New Balance 991v2 “Ghost” collection comprises three colorways inspired by Stone Island’s camouflage-themed Ghost line. Coming in beige, black and green styles, the made-in-UK Stone Island x New Balance 991v2 sneakers feature smooth nubuck and synthetic leather monochromatic uppers.
Each pair includes a felt Stone Island’s Compass logo patch on their tongues, translucent outsoles which also feature the Stone Island logo and New Balance’s modern FuelCell cushioning.
The New Balance 991v2 is a contemporary update to the original 991, first released in 2001. It was introduced at retail in October 2023 via another collaboration with Stone Island.
The Stone Island x New Balance 991v2 “Ghost” collaboration will be released first in Japan on Sept. 18. That will be followed by a wider launch on Sept. 26 on stoneisland.com and from select Stone Island stores globally. Retail pricing has not yet been confirmed.
What We Originally Reported on Sept 2, 2024
Ever since announcing a long-term partnership in March 2021, athletic footwear brand New Balance and Italian luxury clothier Stone Island have released a number of category-bending collaborations. Starting with the RC Elite performance running shoe, the two have also released co-branded classics such as the New Balance 574 and even a soccer kit complete with a Furon v7 Pro boot. Stone Island in October 2023 also helped introduce New Balance’s revamped 991v2 model, and now the labels are back with another installment.
Said to be part of Stone Island’s camouflage-inspired Ghost line, which features entirely monochromatic garments, the latest link-up between the two entities focuses once again on the New Balance 991v2.
This time around, three different styles will be released in black, olive green and off-white tonal looks. Although in-hand images are currently scarce, it looks like the sneakers will use a mostly mesh and suede construction. Stone Island’s signature compass badge logo appears on the tongue of each pair.
First released in ’23, the New Balance 991v2 is part of the brand’s Made in UK line with production taking place in the English coastal village of Flimby. It’s a modernized update of the original New Balance 991 which has been around since 2001.
For the 991v2 update, New Balance kept many of the sneaker’s defining characters intact, but added its new FuelCell cushioning to the midsole for improved comfort. The rest of the tweaks are largely minor aesthetic changes, staying true to the heritage of the original 991 while upgrading it for the present day.
Aside from the Stone Island designs, special New Balance 991v2 releases include August’s “City Exclusive” pack and a still-to-be-released collaboration with multi-brand designer Salehe Bembury.
Release details for this Stone Island x New Balance 991v2 “Ghost” collection have not yet been confirmed, but Stone Island Friday teased the arrival of a new collection and said it was “coming soon.” Retail pricing for the duo’s previous 991v2 sneaker was $270.
