Last year, Nike created four Dunk Lows to honor the same number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as part of its series of “Yardrunners” collections that began in 2020. This year, all signs point to the Terminator High continuing the theme through footwear, as the silhouette has been revealed in a special colorway made for Spelman College.
Founded in 1881, Spelman is the oldest private HBCU for women. That number is stamped in Spelman blue on the shoe’s lateral tip, beginning a series of details nodding to the Atlanta institution. A smooth leather base with shaggy suede overlays, both in grey, form the Terminator’s upper. Additional hits of Spelman blue then arrive on the Swoosh, laces, tongue, lining, and the midsole’s contrast stitching.
A paw print on the insole and spotted sock liner, both of which utilize tonal blue, represents Spelman’s jaguar mascot. The school’s logo then appears on the tongue tag, and the most subtle of all the easter eggs is saved for the laces. There, “Undaunted by the Fight” is printed as a reference to the book of the same name written as a study of Spelman students’ involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.
Additional details arrive as “Thy Name We Praise,” taken from the Spelman hymn, spelled out across the two heels and more jaguar paws appearing beneath the translucent blue outsole. On the interior tongue tag, the school’s “A choice to change the world” motto also makes an appearance.
Release details have yet to be confirmed by Nike, but there’s a good chance the Terminator High “Spelman College” arrives as part of a larger collection in October. In the meantime, Nike also has 15 HBCU team colorways for the Zoom Pegasus 40 on sale through its website as well.
