Nike’s Day of the Dead Sneaker Collection Grows With the Air Max 1 and Blazer

Day of the Dead has become one of the most fun annual tentpoles on Nike‘s release calendar. With an Air Jordan 1 Zoom CMFT 2 and Nike Dunk Low already confirmed to release this month, official images have surfaced to reveal the “Día de Muertos” collection will double in size with the inclusion of the Blazer Mid 77 and Air Max 1.

The Blazer Mid 77 follows the same cues set by the AJ1 and Dunk, as gold detailing features throughout the sneaker. Unlike those sneakers, though, the Blazer features a white leather base. A black Swoosh and mustache are covered in gold speckles, while gold embroidery on the lateral heel looks invoke the Moon and stars instead of the hummingbird that appeared on the aforementioned kicks. The mark appears again on one of two mismatched, pink insoles — the other reading, “Familia” with special Swoosh design. Standard Nike branding then appears in pink on the tongue tag, and off-white accents and a cream sole round out the design.

The Air Max 1 takes an even more divergent route by aligning itself more with the Zoom Pegasus 40 and another Air Max 1 that released for Nike’s “Familia” Latino Heritage Month capsule. Pink makes an even greater presence on this AM1, as the color consumes the entire upper and bleeds into the midsole as part of a gradient. Embroidery then features throughout with neon hues creating flowers and other motifs in the style of papel picado, a traditional Mexican art made by intricate cuts on tissue paper. The inclusion of hummingbirds and marigolds signifies their importance in Day of the Dead mythology, as spirits of the dead can return in the form of the birds, and marigolds are laid out in an effort to help guide them to ofrendas, or alters.

A release date hasn’t yet been confirmed for the “Día de Muertos” Blazer Mid 77 and Air Max 1, although it should arrive soon given that the other two sneakers will drop Oct. 21. Unlike the other sneakers, these two will release in men’s sizing instead of women’s. You can also expect a price of $160 for the AM1 and $120 for the Blazer.
