Kyrie Irving wore a previously unseen sneaker Tuesday night with a high likelihood of being his second signature sneaker from Anta.
The possible Anta Kai 2 sample appeared in an all-black colorway typical for shoes still in development, and Irving’s signature appearing on the midsole indicates that it is indeed his sneaker. Information at this stage is limited to what can be seen with one’s eye.
The most notable visible feature is the lack of a strap, which was used for the Anta Kai 1 but eschewed for the lighter Kai 1 Speed. Several patterns throughout the upper continue the design language of Irving’s current sneaker, and his logo appears to be incorporated into the diamond motif adorning the heel. This build also appears to feature a predominantly suede upper rather than the mix of mesh, synthetic and a rubber plastic composite used for both the Kai 1 and Kai 1 Speed.
In addition to his performance basketball shoes, which are now available in several colorways after the first few quickly sold out, Irving also has an Anta Tribe lifestyle sneaker that’s influenced by skate shoes. That makes a total of three models for Irving’s Anta line, which only made its debut in March after the partnership was announced the previous summer.
Given the timeline, the Kai 2 could launch in March — which would be just after the NBA All-Star Game.
The success of Irving’s Anta line, which Anta Sports head of U.S. marketing Christian Laursen told FN over the summer wasn’t yet being produced in the volume to match demand in the States, comes after the Chinese brand has been under scrutiny for its alleged use of forced labor. Irving himself is also not without controversy, as he joined Anta after being dropped by Nike for sharing a documentary with an antisemitic and taking his time before distancing himself from them and apologizing.
Irving’s debut of the possible Anta Kai 2 sample came during a loss to the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder in which the Dallas Mavericks guard pt up 17 points and 5 assists.
