Bronny James tallied the first regular season points of his NBA career Wednesday, and he did so in a surprising pair of sneakers.

With only two minutes remaining and the Los Angeles Lakers down by 22 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron James’ son hit a stepback shot to record his first regular season field goal. Bronny also had two assists in five minutes of action, but the Lakers ultimately fell as the Cavaliers finished with a 134-110 win.

LeBron took in the historic moment from the sideline, telling reporters afterwards that Bronny was “better than I would have been in that situation” for being able to maintain his composure under pressure.

“To see him get his first NBA basket in this arena where he grew up, not too far from here, it’s an unbelievable moment for him, first of all. For our family, it’s just pretty cool to be a part of it,” the elder James said in the postgame presser.

Bronny told the media he had been dreaming of the moment since he first picked up a basketball. “It was just a dream come true for me,” James Jr. said. “It felt really good after the fact. I was still in game mode when I hit the shot, so I didn’t really acknowledge it while I was playing.”

And while Bronny has worn his father’s Nike signature line for many of his NBA preseason and regular season games thus far, the rookie chose a different sneaker during Wednesday’s game, opting for Kobe Bryant’s Nike Kobe 6 Protro in the “Italian Camo” colorway. Released as a Protro in April 2024, the sneaker originally came out in 2011.

It’s not the first time Bronny has played in Nike Kobe sneakers — he and his Sierra Canyon teammates famously wore matching “Grinch” Kobe 6 Protros in 2023 — but it’s bound to be the most memorable for the foreseeable future.

The Nike Kobe 6 Protro “Italian Camo” has long been sold out. Pairs currently resale for an average of around $400 on platforms including StockX and GOAT.
