Bernie Sanders found himself among a group of exuberant sneakerheads Tuesday afternoon as we walked the streets of Burlington, Vermont.
The Senator from Vermont briefly chatted with a group of men who had just purchased the much hyped Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 “Navy.” Before asking the price of the shoes, Sanders said, “They’re nice sneakers, but they’re more than I would pay. Upon learning the figure, he made an astonished expression and repeated,” $225″ in his singular voice and then took his leave from the group.

Bernie Sanders learning the prices of Air Jordans sounds like it could be a “Saturday Night Live” sketch, and jokes have since spread on social media urging him to address sneaker prices, invoking is famously frugal nature and his positioning against wealth inequality.
In response to a video of the encounter posted by Sanders’ communication director to X/Twitter, one user replied, “Bernie’s entire wardrobe, purchased in 1977, combined didn’t cost $500.”
Another said, “This is why Bernie is received better by younger people. He is always authentically himself. He doesn’t try to copy popular trends or language. He’s just an old guy who cares about people, workers, and healthcare, who engages genuinely with everyone he meets.”
Another video of the exchange was posted by a Burlington-based reseller with the username @closetby.qp on Instagram.
The Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 “Navy” released this week through select local skateshops and boutiques throughout the country. Its the second collision of Nike properties on the model, following a revered “Pine Green” colorway from 2023.
Resale prices for the newer variant jump as up as $500, a figure Sanders would likely find even more unthinkable.
