New Balance’s 550 sneaker may not have gone anywhere, continuing to be one of the brand’s most popular model for several years running. Nonetheless, Atmos is seeing that the ’80s basketball silhouette is “Back in Black.”
New Balance‘s latest 550 collaboration brings a monochromatic look with what appears to be a mixture suede, leather, mesh, and satin. The bulk of the sneaker is clad in black, save for the branding for white branding and trim for the eyelet strap as it stretches across the lateral and medial sides. While the lateral “N” logo is inset, the medial’s takes on a raised pops out with the texture of a basketball.
There’s not Atmos branding to be found throughout the sneaker’s exterior and interior, as its content to leave the sleek look as its stamp. Atmos cited rappers who sported all-black and all-white looks in the mid-2010s as its inspiration and describes its take on the 550 as “edgy” with a “renewed street taste.”
Although parent company Footlocker announced in October plans to shutter Atmos’ three U.S. stores and website, all indications are that the sneaker will still release stateside before it shifts its focus to the Asian market. As of now, the only release channel confirmed is a raffle open through Atmos Japan’s website through Dec. 22. However, the boutique’s U.S. Instagram account has teased that its New Balance 550 “Back in Black” is “coming soon.” Expect pricing to come in around the $130 mark.
