One of the lesser-seen yet consistently in-demand Air Jordan sneakers is finally set to return after more than a decade since its last retail appearance.

According to new reports, the “Fire Red” Air Jordan 5 worn by Michael Jordan in the early 1990s will be making a return during fall 2025. As one of two original Air Jordan 5 “Fire Red” colorways, this pair is differentiated by its black nylon tongue instead of the reflective silver seen on the other pair. And while the more frequently released “Fire Red” pair uses a mostly black midsole, the original style rumored to return in ’25 uses a predominantly red look.

Aside from its first iteration in 1990, this black tongue “Fire Red” Air Jordan 5 has only been released on two occasions: first in 2006 and again in 2013. Like the original pair, both retro versions featured “23” embroidery near the heel — a detail which mimicked the player exclusive versions worn by Jordan — but there’s no confirmation yet if this will be included on the upcoming ’25 version.

The black tongue “Fire Red” Air Jordan 5 was one of the model’s four original colorways. Alongside the aforementioned reflective tongue “Fire Red,” other first-run styles included the “Black/Metallic” and “Grape.”

As for the sneaker’s silver tongue counterpart, it was first reissued in 2000. Its third release came in 2008 as part of a Countdown Pack alongside the Air Jordan 18. It received the retro treatment again in 2013 and most recently, in 2020. The colorway served as the inspiration for Virgil Abloh’s Off-White x Air Jordan 5 in “Sail,” which was also released in 2020. On court, the silver tongue “Fire Red” Air Jordan 5 was worn by Jordan when he scored a career-high 69 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 28, 1990.

In addition to the return of this “Fire Red” style, the Air Jordan 5’s original “Black/Metallic” colorway will receive a Reimagined makeover next year.

According to @zsneakerheadz and Sneaker Files, the black tongue Air Jordan 5 Retro “Fire Red” will be released during fall ’25. Retail pricing of $210 is expected, and this story will be updated with more details as they’re announced.
