The Nike Alphafly 3 Super Shoe carried Abdi Nageeye to victory at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday.
Nageeye finished the race in 2:07:39, beating Adidas runner Evans Chebet in a close finish.
The athlete becomes the first Dutch runner to ever win the New York City marathon. The race marked an emotional comeback for the 35-year-old runner, who dropped out of the marathon at the Paris Games this summer due to hip pain.
For his big day, Nageeye chose the Swoosh’s Alphafly 3 — Nike’s lightest shoe in the Alphafly franchise. It features the brand’s Atomknit as well as notched laces and an integrated knit tongue with lofted padding. Nike added three innovations to the shoe, including two forefoot Air Zoom units. These are paired with heel-to-toe ZoomX midsole foam. The third innovation is a full-length carbon fiber plate.
Just last month, Ruth Chepngetich broke the women’s world record at the Chicago Marathon in the Alphafly 3. The shoe was first worn by Kelvin Kiptum last October during the 2023 Chicago Marathon, when he broke the men’s marathon world record with a time of 2:00:35.
The Nike Alphafly 3 is available in women’s and men’s sizing, and retails for $285.
More than 50,000 runners from around the world are participating in the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. Olympic gold medalist and New Balance star Gabby Thomas, who appeared on FN’s November 2023 cover, is serving as grand marshal for the race.
