Although the NBA preseason and regular season are still months away, the Samsung NBA Summer League 2016 provided enough action to satisfy those hungry for some basketball in the warmer months. Shining the brightest in the 11-day event was Minnesota Timberwolves guard Tyus Jones, who today was named the Summer League’s Most Valuable Player.
The former Duke University standout led the Timberwolves to four straight wins to help Minnesota advance to the championship game. In seven games, Jones averaged 19.4 points, 6.3 assists, four rebounds and 1.3 steals.
When hitting the court, Jones opted to wear an older signature shoe of fellow NBA guard Kyrie Irving, the Nike Kyrie 1. Jones, the No. 24 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, sported the “Australia” iteration of the shoe, boasting a teal, green strike, radiant emerald, and metallic red bronze color palette.
After winning a NCAA title with Duke in 2015, Jones played 37 games during the 2015-16 NBA season, averaging 4.2 points, 2.9 assists and 1.3 rebounds per game. The 20-year-old came off the bench behind starting point guard Ricky Rubio, who played and started in 76 games.
The championship game — featuring the Timberwolves and the Chicago Bulls — will take place today at 9 p.m. ET and air live on ESPN2. The 67-game event featured 23 teams as well as the NBA D-League Select team.
