A Pair of Nike’s ‘Back to the Future’ Sneakers Is Selling for $12K on Ebay

A bit of “Future” history is going for big bucks right now.
Ebay seller “ragingyak” is currently offering up a pair of the 2011 Nike Air Mag sneakers of “Back to the Future II” fame for a whopping $11,999 on the resale site. According to the post, the size 10 shoes are brand-new, unused, unworn and in the original packaging.
While that is by far the highest price tag for the sneakers on Ebay, other pairs of the 2011 Nike Mag are being listed for anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000.
The limited-edition shoes have always been a hot ticket on the resale market, but demand has increased following Nike’s announcement this week that it will rerelease the Mags with the self-lacing feature seen in the classic ’80s movie.
The 2011 sneakers were created by Nike as a special fundraiser for The Michael J. Fox Foundation. The athletic brand made light-up versions of the shoes and auctioned them off to help fund Parkinson’s research, raising nearly $10 million in 10 days.

It has since upped the bar for technology. After years of research, the athletic brand has developed a responsive system that it calls Adaptive Fit, which senses the wearer and tightens or loosens the shoe accordingly. It first introduced the concept last year, when it gifted a pair of the self-lacing Air Mags to “Back to the Future II” star Michael J. Fox himself.
Nike is holding a digital drawing to win pairs of the new 2016 edition. To participate, fans must put in an entry via Nike’s The Draw system, now through Oct. 11. A ticket to enter costs $10, and there is no limit on the number of tickets that one person can buy. The winners will be notified on Oct. 17.
