Arguably Nike’s most iconic shoe, the Air Force 1, has been the subject of 2,000 iterations, according to the brand. The latest features one of the brand’s most celebrated technologies: Flyknit.
The Air Force 1 Ultra Flyknit is available via Nike’s interactive look book and retail app, Tech Book, and will hit stores worldwide on Thursday. The shoe will retail for $175.
Nike Sportswear designers — including footwear engineers, developers, last engineers, Flyknit programmers, 3D designers and product-line managers — sought to make a lighter and more flexible Air Force 1 while enhancing its fit and reducing creasing on the toe vamp, according to the brand. The designers also wanted to keep the shape and paneling of the original silhouette intact and employed the structures and textures necessary to do so. The result is the lightest Air Force 1 ever.
The shoe keeps the concentric circles of the original’s sole pivots, the 52 stars on the rubber toe piece and Air lettering and tooling, but it features stamped instead of embossed lettering on the midsole.
For the launch of the Air Force 1 Ultra Flyknit, the shoe will come in two color ways for Nike Sportswear — multicolor and University Red — as well as an all-white colorway for NikeLab.
