The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is sweeping its way through the NCAA tournament.
On Monday, the top-seeded Huskies took out Duquesne, 97-51, to move on to the Sweet 16. While more focus tends to be directed toward the men’s tournament, UConn’s women’s team is poised to make history.
If the Huskies, led by head coach Geno Auriemma, win the championship, it will be their fourth straight NCAA women’s title and their 11th title overall. The University of Tennessee women’s team won three in a row in the 1990s, but no women’s team has ever won four. If the Huskies do win, it will also give Auriemma one more championship title than famed UCLA men’s basketball coach John Wooden.
To complement their unmatched skills, the UConn women wear slick sneakers on their feet. For the tournament, they’ve been wearing Nike KD8 Elite PE sneakers with a mostly white upper and knit ankle sock. A husky is featured on the shoe’s heel, and “UConn” is printed on the red soles. The Nike Swoosh accent is done in navy blue, and there are also red accents throughout the shoe.
The women are set to play on Saturday against University of Mississippi at 11:30 a.m.
