Adidas teased a sneaker release in conjunction with Parley for the Oceans in September, and now that shoe has been unveiled.
The Ultra Boost Uncaged Parley, according to the brand, is the first mass-produced performance shoe and is made with Parley Ocean Plastic. The shoe will make its way to retail mid-November.
Although the brand will start by releasing 7,000 pairs of this shoe, it has committed to creating 1 million pairs of Ultra Boost with Parley Ocean Plastic by the end of 2017.
The Ultra Boost Uncaged Parley boasts a knitted upper made of 95 percent ocean plastic and 5 percent recycled polyester. The shoe also features laces, heel cap base material, heel webbing, heel lining and the sockliner cover made using recycled materials.
But before the sneaker hits retail, Adidas will have its sponsored soccer clubs Bayern Munich and Real Madrid wearing Adidas x Parley jerseys, also produced with Parley Ocean Plastic.
“This represents another step on the journey of Adidas and Parley for the Oceans. We have not only managed to make footwear from recycled ocean plastic, but have also created the first jersey coming 100 percent out of the ocean,” Eric Liedtke, Adidas Group executive board member responsible for global brands, said in a statement. “But we won’t stop there. We will make 1 million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic in 2017 – and our ultimate ambition is to eliminate virgin plastic from our supply chain.”
Bayern Munich will wear all red jerseys on Saturday when the team faces TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, and Real Madrid will wear all white jerseys on Nov. 26 when they play Real Sporting de Gijón.
The Bayern Munich jersey will be available for purchase today, and Real Madrid’s jersey will be available on Nov. 24. The looks will be available via adidas.com/parley and in selected stores.
Both the shoes and the jerseys were made with marine plastic waste recovered through Parley’s interception and clean-up operations in coastal areas of the Maldives.
“At this point, it’s no longer just about raising awareness. It’s about taking action and implementing strategies that can end the cycle of plastic pollution for good,” said Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley for the Oceans. “Eco-innovation is an open playing field. With the release of the Ocean Plastic jerseys and Ultra Boost Uncaged Adidas x Parley shoes, we’re inviting every consumer, player, team and fan to own their impact under Parley A.I.R. and define their role within the movement.”
