Luigi Mangione made an unexpected footwear choice while being taken to NY State Criminal Court yesterday in New York.

The alleged killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was escorted to appear before court on Friday for the first time since his arraignment wearing loafers. The style appeared to be moccasin-inspired, featuring what seemed to be suede and leather uppers, square toes and contrasting stitching. The preppy and clean-cut choice was decisively worn without socks, a strikingly casual choice for the courtroom. It quickly went viral, spiking in Google trends.

Oftentimes, people opt to wear loafers without socks because of the loafer’s more casual nature compared to its Oxford counterpart. Mangione’s case is a peculiar one because of the chill in the New York air.

Chains can be seen wrapped around his ankles in lieu of foot covering. Mangione also wore khakis and a chunky green sweater layered over a crisp white button-down. Overtop his sweater, the 26-year-old wore a bulletproof vest.

While being extradited from Pennsylvania to New York in NYPD custody on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, Mangione’s case was once again tied to footwear thanks to a police officer’s choice of sneakers. The officer laced up a pair of Off-White x Air Jordan 5 “Muslin”, a striking choice for one of the most high-profile perp walks in recent memory. The eye-raising sneaker choice was partnered with faded jeans, a grey hoodie and an NYPD-issued jacket and hat.

Mangione made his first federal court appearance the same day to face charges of murder through use of a firearm, two stalking charges and a firearms offense. According to NPR, Mangione pleaded not guilty on all counts in New York state court back in December but has yet to enter a plea on his federal charges, which include murder. If found guilty in federal court, he could face the death penalty.
