Every four years, the presidential inauguration in the United States brings about a period of pomp and circumstance. In addition to the Jan. 20 ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, there are often other celebratory events leading up to that moment as well as capping off the momentous occasion afterwards.

Of course, major stars are known to take the stage for inaugurations. Back in 2001, Destiny’s Child, wearing jeans with heels, performed at a concert “Celebrating America’s Youth” the day before George W. Bush took office.  In 2005, Hilary Duff wore jeans and Converse as she took the stage at “America’s Future Rocks Today,” a Jan. 18 event included in the festivities. In 2009, when it was time for Barack Obama’s historic swearing in, the likes of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and more iconic musicians participated in the celebrations in a variety of stylish ensembles.  Obama took the oath again in 2013, with Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and more stars involved in the lineup. Both Keys and Hudson wore striking platform heels as they sang.

When Donald Trump took office in 2017, some of the performers included The Rockettes and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. For Joe Biden in 2021, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez were among those celebrating the start of a new era in the White House, wearing a Schiaparelli dress and a Chanel look, respectively. As Trump’s second inauguration nears in 2025, Carrie Underwood has been revealed as one of the performers at the ceremony.

For the stately occasion in the middle of winter, fashions range from understated to bold, often maintaining a sense of elegance and glamour, though it depends on the event — Destiny’s Child and Hilary Duff, for example, showed off more casual aesthetics at the youth-focused events they participated in. See their looks and more from various inauguration events through the years, from 2001 to 2021.
