Since 2016, Marc Jacobs has been sending out variations of his Kiki boot via his namesake brand and via the company’s Heaven line. Featuring a thick, sculpted heel as well as a chunky platform, the shoes add at least six inches of height and feature Mary Jane-esque buckles.

This can range from one singular strap like in the Marc Jacobs collaborative capsule collection for the anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” which featured a red platform Mary Jane, to the 11 buckles of the knee-high boots. But the styles have been a constant in brand shows as well as in campaigns.

The shoes did not catch on immediately. They debuted in a collection that Marc Jacobs did in collaboration with the artist Taboo. At the time, they measured more than eight inches with Kendall Jenner writing on her blog: “These boots were NOT made for walking.” She walked in the show alongside Lady Gaga. But since their launch, the Kiki boot has steadily grown in stature, wedging its own corner in celebrity closets — this is due, in part, to a shorter version being introduced.

A few names like Nicki Minaj, Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian wore them in Marc Jacobs campaigns and then things appeared to hit a crescendo at the 2023 Met Gala: Jacobs dressed Anitta, Kendall Jenner, Kim Petras, Paris Hilton and Grimes, all wearing a version of the shoe. Since then, the Kiki boot has become an it-shoe showing up on red carpets and sidewalks worn by celebrities all over. Even Beyonce wore the boots onstage for her Renaissance world tour.
