The 1975 frontman Matty Healy’s edgy sense of dress has become mainstream in the 2020s — and, as the 2010s begin their style renaissance, we’re taking a look back at his top fashion moments over the years.
Healy’s approach to dressing has always been distinctly nonchalant. When The 1975 first rose to fame, Healy stuck to his distinctly indie roots, frequently wearing dark color palettes that included ripped skinny jeans and knit layers — often in hues of black.
However, upon larger success with the band’s sophomore album “I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It,” the singer opened his wardrobe to more experimentation with color and high-fashion threads — and, nowadays, his style cheekily nods to the dapper dressing of the 1960s and 70’s with a contemporary twist, thanks to help from brands including Dior.
While at the mtvU Woodie Awards in 2014, Healy coordinated with The 1975 bandmate George Daniel in skinny black jeans with distressed knees. Healy’s outfit was given an indie edge with a lightly draped black knit sweater, as well as a matching fedora and sunglasses. Faintly worn black Chelsea boots and a red string bracelet smoothly completed his look.

At Converse’s “Made by You” event with Swim Deep in 2015, Healy gave his indie goth style a sophisticated twist. The “Robbers” singer, yet again, wore black distressed skinny jeans — however, these were paired with a light gray heathered shirt and black coat. A pair of lightly pebbled black leather lace-up derbies streamlined the neutral attire for a groovy base.
2016 found The 1975 at Pandora’s Holiday Live event in New York City. Healy gave his established penchant for edgy neutrals the slip, instead opting to wear a bright red duffle coat atop a matching sweater with a purple and green floral pattern. The musician’s outfit — though his shoes couldn’t be seen — was finished with a thin chain necklace and skinny blue jeans that blossomed from an elaborate tonal hydrangea pattern.
While onstage with The 1975 at the BRIT Awards in 2019, Healy went for a more formal approach in a black tuxedo and bow tie with a white collared shirt. However, the “Give Yourself a Try” singer brought the formalwear his own nonchalant spin with a knit oatmeal beanie, complemented with white dress shoes covered in silver and gunmetal studs.
As the 2020’s began, so did Healy’s presence in the fashion world. At Dior’s menswear show afterparty at its 30 Ave. Montaigne Dior store in Paris, the singer was spotted in a chic monochrome tan Dior coat and gray pinstriped trousers. A clean white T-shirt and polished loafers with thick rounded toes and black rubber soles smoothly finished his outfit.
For the 1975’s performance during Lollapalooza Brazil in March 2023, Healy brought retro inspiration to the stage in a white tank top and brown silky shirt, tucked into black pleated trousers. The singer layered the neutral attire with a light tan blazer and classic black leather Oxfords for a formal finish.
