Kate Moss is a master of effortless style. That fact was cemented decades ago when she became one of the world’s biggest supermodels, alongside Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington in the late 1980s and ’90s. Merging effortless classic basics with grungy statement pieces — and bold shoes to boot, ranging from Hunter boots to towering Jimmy Choo platforms — Moss is in a league of her own when it comes to carefree style with an edge.
To this day, the legendary British model holds influence in the fashion world — from her years in the spotlight while dating Pete Doherty, Johnny Depp and other stars to designing her own collections with brands including Topshop, Zadig and Voltaire and Messika. That said, in celebration of the eternal fashion muse, FN is looking back at some of her boldest, edgiest and straight-up nonchalant looks through the years.
In 1993, for example, Moss stepped out with Campbell for the British Designer of the Year Awards in a lavish oversized fur-trim coat paired with a simple white top and gray miniskirt. Layered over sheer black tights, the additions of black and plaid platforms with lace-up detailing added a punky edge. Moss added her own carefree twist, accessorizing with short layered necklaces and a cigarette.
At a book signing in 1995, Moss wore rainbow tie-dye Mary Jane-style heels with metallic gold straps. Giving the punchy pair more room to shine were silky gray trousers and a black tank top with thin spaghetti straps.
The 1998 premiere of “The Mighty” saw the model and then-boyfriend Johnny Depp arm-in-arm on the red carpet at the Cineplex Odeon Theatre. For the occasion, Moss wore a gray cocktail dress with a slim fit and knee length hem. The sharp piece was paired with sparkling drop earrings and a silky black clutch. Finishing the look — and framing a red pedicure, one of Moss’ beauty signatures over the years — was a pair of nude patent leather mules, featuring thin toe and slingback straps with short stiletto heels.
For the Met Gala in 2009, the model accompanied designer Marc Jacobs for the “Model as Muse”-themed occasion. Her viral outfit (later worn by Blake Lively on “Gossip Girl” that same year) included a shimmering gold one-shouldered minidress with a dramatically draped sleeve and open back. The slinky number was paired with a matching headpiece, as well as coordinating close-toed pumps with platform soles and towering stiletto heels.
To attend a film premiere party in 2014, the mother of Lila Moss sported a pale pink satin outfit covered in polka-dots. Her pajama-inspired look featured a statement-making collar trimmed with feathers. Completing the look were a black turtleneck, drop earrings and a small black clutch. Moss added an effortless spin to the layered outfit with basic black heeled sandals, which included thin straps framing a deep red pedicure.
A year later, in 2015, the English model — who was discovered at JFK Airport in 1988 at the age of 14 — gave rock n’ roll style a daytime spin in an oversized multicolored fur coat and black leather pants. Layered over sheer black sheer stockings, the ensemble was complete with drop earrings and black platform sandals with thick soles and block heels.
To take in the 2017 Kimono Roboto exhibition opening in Tokyo, Moss (who also appeared in that year’s Stuart Weitzman spring campaign) wore a tailored menswear-inspired black suit and white collared shirt with undone buttons. Giving the sharp look an effortlessly femme twist was a dangling gold pendant necklace and black leather lace-up boots.
The British Fashion Awards in 2018 found Moss elevating her red carpet outfits with a ladylike grace. The star arrived in an emerald green satin gown with an angular neckline and sequined silver paneling. Finishing her outfit with a burst of glamour was a sequined silver clutch and diamond bracelet — plus matching sky-high green platform sandals by Jimmy Choo.
The late 2010s found Moss’ daughter, Lila, entering the fashion world’s eye as a model and influencer herself. At Longchamp’s Spring 2020 fashion show during New York Fashion Week, the mother-daughter duo arrived in style. Kate brought her signature edge in a long-sleeved black dress, leather handbag and matching pointed-toe boots. Contrasting her mom’s sharp look, Lila donned a pair green crop top and tiered miniskirt with chunky sneakers.
Moss has a wide network within the fashion community — proven when she hosted an event for Seventy One Gin, the gin brand created by fashion photographer Mert Alas. In 2021, Moss hosted a Seventy One Gin party in Paris, wearing a black dress embellished with sparkling geometric crystals. The model, arriving with boyfriend Nikolai Von Bismarck at Lapérouse Restaurant, finished her ensemble with a black textured clutch and fur coat — plus a set of strappy black platform sandals.
Even when she’s off-duty, Moss always knows how to pull together an edgy outfit — frequently serving lessons in the art of all-black dressing. A key example is her arrival to The Mark Hotel ahead of the 2022 Met Gala, where she greeted onlookers in a chic black blazer, slim-fitting trousers and oversized sunglasses. Tying her outfit together were pendant necklaces and a quilted leather handbag. For a wild finish, the model strapped into a set of black slingback pumps with thin heels and leopard-spotted panels.
