Attention owners of Nike Elite backpacks: Watch out for your zippers.
A new TikTok trend involves young people stealing the zippers off of other people’s Nike Elite backpacks. The teenagers are gathering collections of the removable fastening device, leaving others zipperless. The mischievous trend picked up amongst the youth in recent days, spreading like rapid fire with the help of social media.
While many are stolen in schools, some zippers even being taken from bags in stores.
“Nah, y’all taking this trend way too seriously,” wrote one user on TikTok with a video showing zipperless backpacks in a store selling athletic products.
“Can’t even buy a Nike elite backpack without no zippers,” another user wrote in a different video showcasing the same issue.

One good samaritan posted a tutorial to help Nike Elite backpack owners protect their zippers. The TikTok user showed how looping the zipper tie around a few times might make it more difficult for others to remove it or at least delay the process giving the owner time to react.
Why this trend is taking over is perhaps inscrutable, but it only emphasizes Nike’s presence within the youth demographic.
Zippers are being targeted whilst Nike handles a major transition in leadership. It was recently revealed that CEO John Donahue is stepping down and former Nike executive Elliott Hill will take his place at the helm of the brand. The official change of hands will take effect Oct. 13, and Nike employees are already expressing excitement about the new development.
