UPDATED Marc By Marc Jacobs Line to Shutter: Shoes You Need To Buy Now

Updated:

Marc Jacobs confirmed to Women’s Wear Daily today that the Marc by Marc Jacobs line is closing.

The designer told the publication of the line closing: “‘The intention now is no different than when Robert and I started Marc by Marc Jacobs or Marc-no-Jacobs,’ Jacobs said, using his nickname for the original label. ‘We believed that fashion could exist at lots of different prices. It could be flip-flops for $30, a well-priced T-shirt; there could be an honesty and integrity in different types of clothes. It wasn’t supposed to be a second line or the poor-relative-of. I’m sitting here in a $2,000 cashmere/silk sweatshirt hoodie that we’ve made for 15 years and Adidas track pants and a cotton shirt from American Apparel, and I have a Prada fur coat upstairs. I think as myself as a fashion customer, and I know on a daily basis I will wear everything from American Apparel to Adidas to Marc Jacobs to Prada. I love that mix of things, that high and low, that rich and poor, all of those contrasts, the everyday and the extraordinary.”‘

As Women’s Wear Daily reported yesterday, the Marc by Marc Jacobs label is rumored to be folding, to be absorbed into the Marc Jacobs main line. The news comes as something of a shock considering the label has so many seemingly successful offshoots, including Marc Jacobs Beauty and Bookmarc, the brand’s bookstore.

The footwear from Marc by Marc Jacobs offers the designer’s signature whimsy at more accessible prices and is currently sold by major retailers like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s. With news of the closing, the main line will reportedly begin offering lower prices as well, with the overall collection widening in scope.

No statement has been released on where Marc by Marc Jacobs’ creative director, Katie Hillier, and women’s design director, Luella Bartley, will end up.

In light of the news, we took a look at the brand’s footwear for spring ’15, which runs the gamut from holographic heels to leather espadrilles.

While the label offers an array of styles for customers to choose from, it will be interesting to see how the Marc Jacobs collection finds its focus once the diffusion line is no longer around.
