Nicole Kidman Opts for Neutrals in Slick Mules for ‘A Family Affair’ World Premiere

Nicole Kidman hit up the premiere of her new Netflix film “A Family Affair” in neutral-toned pieces. For the Los Angeles event, she wore a strapless Gucci dress featuring a corset, thigh-high slit and a chunky gold choker. The choker was worn with a bow that tied at the back. A gold watch and thick chain bracelet matched the choker.

For shoes, the Australian slid into a pair of slick patent leather mules from Paris Texas. Visible through the split, the shoes are minimal, almost disappearing on the foot. They are an open-toe silhouette featuring only one strap across the ball of the food.

The mule silhouette has a long history, stretching back to ancient civilizations in Egypt and Rome — Ancient Roman magistrates wore them. Typified by its open back, mules are a slip-on style that was originally a bedroom slipper that became notably popular in the French court of the 1700s with the likes of Marie Antoinette wearing them as well as Madame de Pompadour wearing heeled versions in public.

Over time, the shoes increasingly have become a major fashion item, with a variety of labels offering their won iterations including some open-toe styles as mules are typically feature closed toes. They are a unisex style offered in both heeled and flat iterations. In menswear, the Muleboyz brand is indicative of the silhouette’s popularity.

Kidman walked the carpet with the likes of co-stars Zac Efron and Joey King. In the romantic comedy, she stars opposite Efron who plays her lover. The mother of four is o stranger to going head-to-toe nude. In December, while attending a screening of “Expats” she went monochromatic, wearing a pair of suede nude pumps with a draped gown of the same hue. Otherwise, she’s often sleek and chic on red carpets wearing brands like Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik and Aquazzura.
