Naomi Osaka laced up a pair of her own Nike sneakers to compete in the Australian Open on Jan. 13. In the first round of the tournament, Osaka, who represents Japan, beat Caroline Garcia of France and is set to face off against Czech player Karolína Muchová tomorrow, Jan. 14.
The sneakers brought a zing of color to Osaka’s athletic outfit, which included a tight-fitting black top and a swishy patterned skirt. She also wore black Swoosh-emblazoned wristbands and a visor with the recognizable symbol as well. In alignment with her shoes, her accessories included dainty sunflower stud earrings and adornments in her hair. She also wore a nameplate necklace with her daughter’s name, Shai.
Osaka’s shoes were the Nike GP Challenge 1 “Naomi Osaka” Women’s Hard Court Tennis Shoes, a $160 sneaker in an orange and brown colorway paying homage to the sunflower. In addition to the color scheme referencing the flower, floral detailing is brought in with a subtle design stitched on the upper and a three-dimensional sunflower embellishment on the tongue. On the outer side of the shoe is a metallic silver Swoosh placed toward the back and curving around the heel, while a smaller Swoosh is on the inner side on the sneaker. The shoes feature Nike’s Air Zoom cushioning and are designed to offer side-to-side stability.
Earlier in January, Osaka wore a different iteration of her Nike GP Challenge 1 shoes while competing in New Zealand in the 2025 ASB Classic, opting for the multi-colored “Osaka” pair featuring various earth tones. Off the court, Osaka displays a variety footwear silhouettes — she wore cowboy boots from Havva to GQ’s western-themed 2024 Men of the Year Party and platform sandals to make an appearance at Tag Heuer’s boutique on Fifth Avenue in New York City this past summer.
