Michelle Yeoh chose a chic pair of chunky sneakers to attend the conversation for “Star Trek: Section 31” at 92NY alongside her castmates Robert Kazinsky and Omari Hardwick, and director Olatunde Osunsanmi.
Cutting a cool casual look, Yeoh’s footwear choice for the event was a pair of platform chunky sneakers that featured a beige design and tan overlays. The platform region of the shoe measured approximately 1.5 to 2 inches.
The shoe featured the shape of a slightly rugged rubber outsole. The outer front portion of the footwear was crafted in a rounded-toe design, which has been a trending style donned by many celebrities over the past few weeks. The silhouette was finished in a sleek, minimalistic colorway.
As for her outfit, Yeoh kept it comfortably cozy with baggy jeans and an oversized teal turtleneck. Also keeping her makeup simple, she wore a sleek pair of cat eye sunglasses with a leopard print design.
While platform shoes have never truly gone out of style, the trend experienced its first wave in the 1970s. Now, in 2025, platform shoes are now considered to be a rising trend again. Also known as “dad shoes” or “chunky shoes,” this chunky model has been deemed more comfortable than silhouettes built with sharp and pointy outsoles due to their lightly padded midsole and elevated nature.
In 2024, brands like Versace and Pleaser released quite a few variations of platform shoes in the forms of boots, sneakers and sandals in anticipation for the spring 2025 season. Styles like Versace’s Aevitas Leather Platform Boots and the Adore 3000 have become popular platforms of choice.
Yeoh has had some great shoe looks during this promotional circuit. For the premiere of “Star Trek: Section 31” World Premiere held at Jazz at Lincoln Center, she wore Balenciaga‘s signature “Knife” pumps which retail for $975, and are known for their sharp, elongated pointy toes. The shoes come in different variations, including a velvet stiletto version with a rounded vamp and razor-sharp toes, and are finished with a 4.3-inch.
Yeoh counts Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Gucci, Schiaparelli and more as some of her favorite designers, and has been praised over the years for her eclectic style.
