Singer Mariah the Scientist pulled out a pair of legendary heels for her latest performance. The performer was tapped to provide halftime entertainment at the NBA game between the Phoenix Suns and the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. For it, she chose to wear a Fanci Club cropped fur jacket. The lace up style is named the Carolina. In addition, she put on a pair of black leather trousers.
For footwear, Mariah reached for a pair of novelty boots. She chose a pair of Dsquared2 Skate Moss boots in black leather. As her pants covered the tops of the shoes its unclear which version she was wearing but the blades on the bottoms of the shoes made them unmistakably the Dsquared2 Skate Moss style from the brand’s fall 2011 collection.
The version Mariah wore are a lace-up style featuring decorated, brogue detailing. They also feature a rounded toe and a stiletto heel of four and a half inches. Most notably are the three ice skating blades on the bottom of the shoe, earning the titular “Skate Moss” label. The blades made the shoes as tall as eight inches. Originally they sold for anywhere from $890 to $1,497.
“We’ve sold tons of them, surprisingly,” Dean Caten told the Toronto Star at the time. “We can’t keep them in the store. They’ve become this sort of an icon piece of the season for our customers.”
The boots were originally available in black leather, white leather as well as suede. The boots also came in a variety of heights (from ankle bootie to knee-high) with a Chelsea boot option as well as lace-ups. When the popular Instagram page Fashion Bomb Daily shared the look on Instagram, with her cropped Fancí Club jacket being the focal point, fans quickly jumped to the comments to inquire about the origin of the shoes.

Aside from Mariah, there are other musicians who have also come out as fans of the boot. Just last year, Bree Runway revealed online that she had purchased a pair. After she posted the shoes to Instagram, she revealed on X that Law Roach messaged her to say they had come from his personal archive.
Novelty shoes, or shoes that are particularly unique, have been increasing over the last few years. Designers like Jonathan Anderson have designed them increasingly.
