When the 2024 Golden Globe nominations were announced last week, Jodie Foster earned her 12th career nod, for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for “Nyad.” The Netflix film is based on the true story of marathon swimmer Diana Nyad, played by Annette Bening, who, at 60, commits to swimming from Florida to Cuba with the support of her best friend and coach, played by Foster.

Jodie Foster has been acting since she was child, and earned critical acclaim and Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her role alongside Robert De Niro in “Taxi Driver” in 1976, when she was just 12. She also starred in Disney’s original “Freaky Friday” that year, which also earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She has won three career Golden Globes, for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for “The Accused” and “Silence of the Lambs” in 1989 and 1992, respectively, and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for “The Mauritanian” in 2021.

Ahead of the 2024 Golden Globes, FN looks back at Foster’s shoe and style moments on Golden Globes red carpets of years past. In 1998, 1999 and 2000, she served up perfect Y2K casual cool girl glam, and in this millennium, she has demonstrated a penchant for sequins. In terms of footwear, black peep-toes and silver-heeled sandals were staples in her Golden Globe red carpets of years past.

At the 2013 Golden Globes, Foster wore black open-toed platforms underneath a custom Giorgio Armani navy blue sequin gown. The glam floor-length dress featured crisscross straps in contrasting colors and a slim silhouette. She paired it with one thick pave diamond bracelet and an oblong metal clutch, and her hair in a sleek bob. That year, she was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is given annually to an actor for their “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.”

On the 2012 Golden Globe red carpet, the legendary actor wore another variation on Armani blue sequins and black shoes. Here, she wore shiny black Ferragamo peep-toe heels with a strapless turquoise Giorgio Armani sequin dress. The fully-beaded floor-length gown featured a bustier-style top and a cinch of fabric that cascaded down from the waist. She wore a single diamond bracelet and her hair in a side-parted bob.

The “Silence of the Lambs” star was a Y2K dream at the 2000 Golden Globes. She wore metallic silver heeled sandals with a pink beaded spaghetti strap top and a lavender beaded mesh maxi skirt. A pink satin handle purse completed the very of-the-moment look that could certainly be updated by a Gen Z celeb on the red carpet today. She wore her bob in messy cool-girl style, and brought Russel Crowe—looking dashing in a long jacket tux—as arm candy.

Jodie Foster, Golden Globes 1999

This was Jodie Foster’s Y2K icon era. At the final Golden Globes of the ’90s, she wore a gray-purple floor-length slip dress with beaded flower detailing and an organza overlay, with silver heeled sandals peeking out. Paired with a coordinating envelope purse and an up-do, similar looks good be found at homecoming dances across the country.

At the 1998 Golden Globes, Foster stepped out in black strappy stilettos and simple form-fitting long navy blue—her favorite color—dress. She wore a long mesh navy shirt jacket over it and carried a rectangular satin navy clutch. She wore a simple-yet-stunning diamond necklace and diamond earrings, and her hair flipped up at the ends, ’90s style (which saw a resurgence in 2021, as worn by Cardi B and Jennifer Lopez).

For the 1996 Golden Globes, Foster went big. She wore pink-ish raw silk pointed-toe pumps underneath a voluminous pewter crushed velvet high-waisted skirt thought brought out her eye color. It was paired with a gray scoop neck tee, a black clutch and big, teased-up hair. She wore a coral lip with her always-natural makeup.

In 1995, the LGBTQIA icon opted for a gender neutral all-black suit and black driving shoes. The long top appears subtly inspired by the design of a Chinese Tang suit, accessorized with a crystal brooch, and the pants looked like straight leg tuxedo pants. She wore her hair in her classic chin-length bob, with a deep red lip.

At the 1993 Golden Globes, Foster channeled classic First Lady elegance in all-black. She wore classic black pointed toe pumps with black long sleeve off-the-shoulder dress with black tights. Outside, she wore a fitted black jacket over the dress. Her hair was styled in soft ’50s waves and she wore a red lip and gold and silver diamond pave princess necklace and diamond earrings. She also wore a red ribbon pin on her dress for AIDS awareness—11 months later, in the throes of the pandemic the CDC declared Dec. 1 Wolds AIDS Day.

At the 1992 Golden Globes, Foster took home her second career win, for her heralded role as Clarice in “Silence of the Lambs.” She looked effortlessly glam in little black dress with cap sleeves and a heart-like cutout at the chest. She paired the timeless dress with black satin almond-toe slingback pumps and sheer black tights. She wore crystal drop earrings abd a red ribbon on her dress for AIDS awareness.

Just three years earlier, at 26, she took home her first Golden Globe win, for her lead role in “The Accused.” She also wore a little black dress with sheer black tights. The LBD was sleeveless with a flattering wide scoop neck, and hit right below the knees. She wore simple diamond studs, a pearl bracelet, a red lip and her hair back in a bun. In the photos available online, you cannot see her shoes.
