Janelle Monae is phoning home. In celebration of Halloween, the artist transformed into the titular alien from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 blockbuster “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial.”
Alongside fellow stars like Heidi Klum, Monae takes Halloween very seriously. While past costumes have included Diva Plavalaguna of “The Fifth Element” and the eponymous “Bride of Frankenstein,” this year she paid homage to a classic American film that was released just a few years before she was born.
The multi-hyphenate dressed up as both Elliott Thomas (Henry Thomas) and E.T., fully immersing herself in the nostalgic story with photos, videos and an appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” in full alien garb. In a photo recreating the iconic nighttime flying bike scene, Monae wore Elliot’s signature outfit — blue jeans and a red zip-up sweater which, crucially, she wore with the hood turned up. She completed the look with a pair of all-white sneakers. (In the film, Elliot wears a pair of Nike sneakers which are white with a red Swoosh.)

Monae stepped into a head-to-toe E.T. costume to fully get into character as the beloved creature from space. Amidst a long list of team members involved in her Halloween shoot, she credited Alex Navarro Designs as the costumer. On social media, she shared plenty of content, including a behind-the-scenes photo featuring the components of the E.T. costume, from the bodysuit to the mask to the feet — perhaps one of the most unique pairs of shoes she’s worn to date.
