John B. Fairchild, who headed Fairchild Publications Inc., died Friday morning. He was 87.
In 1955, Fairchild was the European bureau chief of the company before joining Women’s Wear Daily as publisher five years later.
John Fairchild was a familiar face in the newsroom, according to former Footwear News fashion editor Nancy Shapiro. “He was hands-on and a daily presence,” she recalled. “He personally knew many of the staff members.” And, she added: “He always appreciated when an editor got a scoop,” especially at the celebrity level.
“He always had a serious, global projection of the Footwear News,” according to Dick Silverman, former executive editor and assistant publisher. “He was particularly excited and pleased with the creation of [the former] FN International, which was translated into six languages and had global distribution.”
After leading the company for 30 years, Fairchild retired in 1997.
