Adidas Releases City Pack Soccer Cleats For The Street

The German company launched new cleats for the pitch in May. Now it’s taking them to the streets.

Adidas tossed out its old line of soccer cleats in May to make room for just two styles: the Ace and X. Now the German company is reinterpreting the two looks “for the cages and courts of the cities where street soccer lives,” according to a statement.

The new styles, called the Adidas City Pack, take inspiration from London, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. Each cleat will feature a graphic that reflects the city. For instance, Brooklyn’s brick apartment buildings line the heels of one, while London’s “melting-pot high-rises” are on another.

The color scheme, according to the company, were inspired by concrete and asphalt, with bright accents representing neighborhoods.

The re-imagined styles follow Adidas’ announcement earlier this year when it lined up several athletic stars — Lionel Messi, Thomas Muller and Louis Suarez, to name a few — for a heavy marketing campaign to declare the end of its old soccer line.

The goal for Adidas’ soccer line is to connect with modern players, regardless of where the game takes place.

“It’s chaos or control. You need both. They are part of the game. Part of the field,” said elite soccer coach Pep Guardiola in the opening moment of the marketing video below. “You need players who have to analyze what you have to do. And there are other ones who have to be a bit free and show his talent as much as possible. When you have a team you mix both types of ideas. You have a big advantage.”

Another aim of the new shoes is to “represent the cultural melting pot of the cities where the music, art, fashion and soccer scene is constantly changing the game.”
