What We Know About the Shoe Show Data Breach

Shoe Show is the latest footwear retailer to suffer a data breach.

According to a notice filed with the Attorney General of Maine last week, more than 12,800 people might have been impacted by a cybersecurity breach that occurred between June 28 and July 6. In the filing, Shoe Show stated that the breach involved an unauthorized party gaining access to a Shoe Show employee email account. The breach was discovered on Aug. 15.

Shoe Show notified affected individuals about the incident via mail and said it had launched an internal investigation to determine to extent of the data use and was taking steps to prevent similar issues in the future. In a statement, the Concord, N.C.-based shoe retailer said it was “confident that no customer data was involved” in the breach.

“We recently learned that an unauthorized party temporarily gained access to a Shoe Show, Inc. employee’s email account,” the retailer said. “Upon identifying the incident, we promptly secured the email account and initiated an internal investigation. We also engaged a leading forensic security firm to assist with our investigation and confirmed the security of our email environment. We are confident that no customer data was involved.”

Last year, VF Corp. worked with leading external cybersecurity experts to contain, assess and remediate a cybersecurity breach at the company that occurred Dec. 13. In an 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, VF said the company detected unauthorized occurrences on a portion of its information technology systems. And in 2022, The North Face suffered a credential-stuffing attack on its website.
