The measure represents the latest inclusivity effort for the shoe retailer.

Schuh is rolling out a new shopping option for people with atypical footwear needs.

The shoe retailer on Friday will start selling single shoes across all of its stores to cater to people with limb differences or disabilities. Customers interested in purchasing just one shoe will get a 50 percent discount applied to what would be the price of the full pair. The offer, which was previously available via a longer process that required the retailer’s customer experience team, will now be available on demand in all of Schuh’s 120 stores across the UK and Ireland as well as online.

According to the retailer, the initiative marks another effort to embed inclusivity within its operations.

“Creating an inclusive shopping experience is a key part of our business strategy,” said Schuh’s chief retail officer Neil Partington in a statement. “I am delighted to be able to roll out single-shoe purchases to all Schuh stores. We have been doing it via our Customer Experience team for some time, but now, even more people will have access to our hottest brands and products through this inclusive product offering.”

In a release, Schuh said its disability equality employee group and other key leaders seek regular feedback about the shopping experience for disabled people. Schuh also noted that 10 percent of all of its e-commerce product imagery this year features disabled models or models with visible differences. The Scottish footwear brand also works with the Liverpool City Council to help offer employment opportunities for people with disabilities or special needs, offers disability confidence training and neurodiversity training for its staff and regularly offers quiet hours in some of its stores.

Other shoe retailers have introduced similar programs to support adaptive needs in recent years. In 2020, Zappos introduced a program that offers single shoes for people who might need only one shoe or footwear in different sizes. And Zappos worked directly with Ugg, Sorel, Reebok and Crocs to help design their adaptive products. Other brands like Billy Footwear and Cadense offer adaptive products for people with different needs.
