Merrell Chief Product Officer Noreen Naroo-Pucci Talks How the Core Principles of Mentoring Have Changed: Women Who Rock

“Today, it’s more about fostering genuine connections, being candid about the good, the bad and the ugly, and motivating others to overcome obstacles,” Naroo-Pucci told FN.

Footwear and fashion have shifted quite a bit since Noreen Naroo-Pucci entered the industry more than 30 years ago. One such area of change has been in the mentoring space.

“While the core principles of mentoring — shared experiences, transparency and honesty — remain constant, the way we mentor has adapted to new realities,” said Naroo-Pucci, who was named Merrell’s chief product officer in December 2024. “Today, it’s more about fostering genuine connections, being candid about the good, the bad and the ugly, and motivating others to overcome obstacles.”

Specifically in the past decade, Naroo-Pucci — whose career also includes nearly 11 years at Under Armour — believes we now have better tools and a more open mindset to offer guidance, resulting in more nuanced advice and support. “While my generation faced different barriers, today’s mentors understand that there are always new obstacles to overcome,” she explained. “By leveraging our experiences and fostering a supportive environment, we can empower the next generation to kick down doors and achieve their goals.”

What’s more, Naroo-Pucci also believes the differences in journeys is critical in empowering the next female leaders. “We can support them by being candid and honest about our own journeys, providing encouragement and taking the time to listen and engage with them,” she said. “By sharing our stories, offering guidance and fostering open communication, we can help these young leaders develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed.”

A version of this article appeared in the Feb. 3 print issue of FN, as part of the “Women Who Rock” special section. On Feb. 4, FN and Two Ten Footwear Foundation will honor these women at the annual live event in New York City.
