“When I was 25, I was very busy clubbing in London,” quipped Jerome C. Rousseau. All jokes aside, the shoe designer admitted that being 25 years old was actually a very pivotal period for him.
At the time, Rousseau was working as a freelance designer in London for labels such as Matthew Williamson, Jasper Conran and John Richmond. It was while working for other designers that he made a major career move.
“When I was 25, it was the year I decided I would do my own label,” he said. “I wasn’t ready to do it yet, but it was the affirmative year I knew I would have my [namesake] line.”
Rousseau subsequently relocated to California.”I worked really hard over the next five years and saved literally every bit of money I could to put toward [my collection],” he said. “I continued working out of Italy and met great people that would eventually become my partners in Italy as well.”
