The biggest trends of 2024 are on secondhand shoppers’ holiday shopping lists, according to Poshmark.
The 2024 Holiday Trend Report from the resale marketplace highlights the products, brands and fashion trends that consumers are most eager to discover as the holiday season approaches.
A combination of old-money equestrian and practical Western trends are filtering into resale. Poshmark reported that searches for flare and wide-leg jeans are up 26 percent, while searches for barn jackets and horse sweaters have climbed 147 percent and 139 percent, respectively.
This overall gravitation toward traditional fashion is also evident in consumers’ search for brown suede jackets (up 128 percent), sweater dresses (up 196 percent), suede boots (up 196 percent) and burgundy bags (up 145 percent).
Sustainable gifting is becoming a standout trend this holiday season, according to the report, with 69 percent of shoppers saying they are “very open” to receiving secondhand gifts. “For those seeking unique and meaningful options, secondhand items like clothing, vintage finds, and designer bags are at the top of wishlists. Additionally, 36 percent of shoppers are very likely to buy secondhand gifts, as they look for special items with added character and value,” Poshmark stated.
Vintage accessories are among those unique items. Poshmark called out brooches making an “official comeback” as searches for the statement jewelry are up 31 percent. Searches for bracelets, in general, are up 25 percent. However, charm bracelets by Alex and Ani are especially in high demand by Poshmark users with searches up 174 percent.
Handbags with enduring appeal are in demand. Searches for the Coach Brooklyn, a minimalist shoulder bag worn by Bella Hadid, are up 165 percent. Poshmark said consumers are looking for worn-in slouchy versions of the bag, which sells for $495 at traditional retail. Once deemed “cheugy” by Gen Z, the Longchamp Le Pilage is getting a second look at the cohort. The brand’s mini tote is going viral, with searches up 57 percent.
The classics are driving searches in the men’s category as well. The aesthetic is being reinfornced by brands like Todd Snyder and Buck Mason, which have seen searches increase 60 percent and 66 percent, respectively.
“Elevated basics and quality fabrications are top priority when it comes to building a capsule wardrobe,” Poshmark stated.
Poshmark users are searching for new and vintage men’s military and field jackets (up 24 percent) and trench coats (up 27 percent). Though outerwear and activewear brands like Kuhl and Outdoor Research remain popular on the platform, searches for sports coats and cardigans are increasing, up 13 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
