The Show
After a couple of seasons in the cold, Isabel Marant was back with a bang today for spring 2017 at Paris Fashion Week with a collection that was thoroughly in keeping with her DNA, but moved her aesthetic forward in one giant spacey leap. Peasant-style florals with new fuller volumes and ruffles galore punctuated spare, futuristic, silhouettes that looked to the east — all high waists and obi/corset hybrids.
The Shoes
While the RTW featured the odd metallic splash, the designer properly showed her “metal” when it came to the footwear. Her space-age romance played out with ruffle-wrap gladiators cinched at the ankle like an uber-flattering paper bag waist, ruched asymmetric high-heel sandals done in metallics or printed leather to match the fabrics and midi versions, too, with industrial-style kitten heels. There was also a thigh-high cream boot with an open toe that acted like a palette cleanser.
Verdict
Welcome to the future; it’s a brave new world where ruffles elevate the ankles — and not a wedge sneaker in sight.
