Miu Miu Goes 1950s for Spring ’17

Forget pret-a-porter, Miu Miu’s spring collection at Paris Fashion Week was pret-a-piscine.

Unashamedly retro, it harked back to the glory days of the 1950s, when bathing costumes were just that and no one would have even countenanced a cut-out bikini.

As for the footwear, candy colors and aqueous patent finishes predominated. Flatforms with contrast soles and ticker-tape edging (mirroring the taped plywood of the set) made a beeline for the plage, followed by moulded, plasticized wedges sure to withstand a splash or two.

Pool slides came straight up, no chaser, or with pretty scalloped edges and rosette embellishment that recalled the Fifties-style swim caps worn as bonnets.

The hit parade continued with metallic gold platforms sporting flared heels plus clear, cone-heel sandals and even last season’s ballet pump made a cameo — morphed into a buckled plimsoll for the more sportif.
