The Collection: Considering it was Bouchra Jarrar’s debut collection for French label Lanvin, she certainly came in delicately. In her spring ’17 collection shown at Paris Fashion Week, there were thoughtful nods to Lanvin’s signature house codes — a certain old-time glamour, if you will — but also a few forward-looking updates. The opening look, a white silk suit worn with a striped dress shirt that grazed the floor, was both timeless and modern.
Sheer lingerie slip dresses, some with sparkling fabric accents, proved to be racier than the traditional Lanvin aesthetic. As was the completely transparent gown in royal blue — worn sans bra, of course. But considering its customer skews older, there were the safer bets: a V-neck satin gown with long sleeves didn’t scream newness, but was downright pretty nonetheless. And there’s nothing wrong with just pretty.

The Shoes: The evening focus translated into the footwear collection. Most interesting were the embellished slide sandals, which proposed a new approach to cocktail attire. Embellished flats had gold chain mail wrapped around the ankle. There were embellished T-strap heels, too, as well as thong-style sandals with gold chain accents. A mixture of sport and black tie.
The Verdict: A new creative force at a storied fashion house is always a gamble. There needs to be a new eye, but not too new. Jarrar has, so far, rightfully struck the balance — if anything, she can take it a bit further.
