The mood: The coolest uptown girl at a party. Whipstitched coats, luxe fur trims and bare-shoulder halter dresses added an unexpected touch to Gurung’s signature eveningwear. Details like Victorian-style button looping on pants and skirt slits added a dash of retro appeal.
The shoes: The pointer the better. Pointy ankle boots had metallic silver toe caps, further accentuating the silhouette’s severity. The shape was also done on below-the-knee leather boots, which were especially striking in a midnight blue (worn under an embroidered dress). Strappy sandals with side cut-outs were done in a shiny black or burgundy patent.
The review: Not quite as edgy as Joseph Altuzarra or as sophisticated as Jason Wu, Gurung’s latest collection struck a note that managed to balance both a downtown and uptown customer. And that was a good thing. Looks like a printed turtleneck under a thick wool dress proved to be a fresh departure for the designer. We wish the shoes would have been as much as an experiment for him.
