While models hobbled down the New York Fashion Week runways in torturous heels often favored by designers, there was relief this season via a number of sneakers styles. The spring ’17 runways cemented a bevy of different trends. The key takeaways? The all-white colorway is still dominating, while new treatments — such as refined prints or distressed washes — are on the rise.
For the top sneaker trends, read on:
Fringe Benefits
Alexander Wang led the pack with his high-top sneakers with fringe ankle details. The style was offered in black and white leather, with whipstitching on the midsole.
Crisp Whites
The all-white low-top court — a style popularized by the classic Adidas Stan Smith — hasn’t lost momentum. This season, designers embraced crisp whites in every silhouette, including slip-ons and high-tops.
Printed Uppers
A printed sneaker doesn’t have to be flashy. At Baja East, mid-tops were printed with a feminine paisley print and matched the ready-to-wear textiles.
Distressed Washes
While crisp white sneakers were trending this season, the message at Gyspy Sport was the polar opposite. Sneakers were dirtied and pre-distressed on purpose (a treatment Golden Goose recently got criticized for doing).
Sneaker-Boot Hybrids
At DKNY, designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow offered a new sneaker idea: the sneaker-boot hybrid. The styles had neoprene sock uppers and chunky rubber soles.
Sole Interest
Cult sneaker brand Visvim looked to the traditional Japanese Geta sole, incorporating its blocky shape onto the bottom of low-top sneakers. At Rag & Bone, rubber soles extended to the sides and cap toe.
