Monique Lhuillier had fun at New York Fashion Week, showcasing shoes that featured bold textures and embroideries. Plus, the designer incorporated vintage looks to celebrate 20 years in the fashion business.
“There is a lot of embellishment and attention to detail on the shoes,” the designer told FN backstage before the Sept. 13 show. “Lots of focus on the ankle, jeweled anklets and ribbons. This is my 20th anniversary, so I started with the archive pieces that existed in my collection and thought what shoes would go perfect with this. Simple shapes, but a combination of different textures and embroideries that took it to the next level. A lot of flats this season, with metallic and woven materials.”
Lhuillier said she incorporates both heels and flats into her wardrobe. “I like to wear high heels at night because I’m petite,” she said. “When you have long days, there is nothing like a flat. I don’t like ordinary flats, though. I like my flat to have something interesting happening. I actually test-drove a lot of these flats, and they already exist in my collection.”
As for her pre-show ritual, Lhuillier enjoys running. “I always go to Central Park and run for [up to] two hours. I listen to my music, let my mind race and sweat,” she said.
The designer also attended the premiere of “Bridget Jones’ Baby” while in New York City. “I highly recommend it,” she said. “It’s good. I laughed so hard I cried, and I actually thought about having another child.”
Looking ahead, Lhuillier said she is still building her collection and won’t collaborate until the timing is right. “My collection has only been out for about 2.5 years,” she said. “I want to grow the category more, open more stores, etc. It’s still my baby.”
Lhuillier, who lives in Los Angeles, talked about celebrities wearing her looks. “I have a great relationship with a lot of these girls who are high-profile,” she said. “They have been my muses through the years. I just want them to continue wearing it. All the feedback about the footwear has been positive.”
