Gucci’s Signature Loafers and Mules Get an Oversize Treatment for Spring

Alessandro Michele is famously not a minimalist, and at Milan Fashion Week, his spring ’17 collection for Gucci proved — once again — that more is always more. The latest women’s shoes included new updates on the Italian label’s signature horsebit loafers, as well as continuations of its loafer mules (a style that has flown off retailer shelves this past year).

Leather horsebit loafers were reworked with squared toes and a platform heel, some embellished with oversized pearls and a spiky midsole. It was a perfect marriage of the old and the new. Michele took the silhouette one step further by embellishing some with crafty rhinestones. Even the loafer mules got a flatform sole this season — pink suede style, for example, had a red satin flatform with floral embroidery.

New introductions for spring included attached sock treatments (the sock bootie was a trend we also saw at Fendi). Ankle-strap sandals had an attached latex sock — very Kinky Boots — that went just below the knee. A wedge sandal also had an attached ankle sock, printed in an aqua floral.

Flat mensy monk straps had Gucci’s signature Dionysus snake buckle. Patent pumps were kept relatively simple, but some had oversized pearl bows added on the front.
