Michael Phelps on the Olympic podium with a gold medal draped around his neck is a familiar sight, but seeing the Under Armour-sponsored athlete wearing Nike sneakers on the podium will never appear normal.
The decorated swimmer won gold medals 20 and 21 on Tuesday, first for the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay with teammates Conor Dwyer, Townley Haas and Ryan Lochte, and later by himself in the 200-meter butterfly. When it came time to accept the gold with his teammates, Phelps was dressed head to toe in Nike, an official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic Team, including the brand’s Volt-colored kicks.
Prior to the games, Under Armour presented Phelps with two pairs of patriotic sneakers to bring to Rio — the the Architech, a 3D-printed training silhouette, and the SpeedForm Slingshot runner.
Phelps was spotted after Tuesday’s relay holding his Under Armour Architech with his swimming teammates and Klay Thompson, Demarcus Cousins, DeAndre Jordan, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant of the Team USA men’s basketball team.
In addition to the two gold medals he won on Tuesday, Phelps has another gold from the 2016 Summer Olympic games for the 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay. The swimmer still has two events left to compete in: the men’s 200-meter individual medley and the men’s 100-meter butterfly. The men’s 200-meter individual medley takes place on Wednesday, and the men’s 100-meter butterfly is scheduled for Thursday.
