He’s been called one of the greatest men’s players in tennis, and Roger Federer proved again on Wednesday that he can deliver when it counts. The 34-year-old staged a major comeback in his Wimbledon quarterfinal match against Marin Cilic and overcame a two-set deficit to emerge victorious in the fifth set.
The Nike star, who’s been injured for part of the season, will now play Canadian Milos Raonic in the semifinals on Friday.
Federer debuted a new sneaker style with his sponsor Nike for this year’s Wimbledon. The two partners have updated his favorite performance tennis shoe, the NikeCourt Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour, using the brand’s popular Flyknit material technology. At this year’s tournament, Federer’s right shoe features a London skyline and the number 7, signifying his seven Wimbledon titles.
According to Nike, the shoe has a strong, tight knit in the midfoot to maintain the stability needed for a tennis game’s many lateral moves. But at the same time, it offers breathability in the toe and is lighter than the regular Zoom Vapor. The shoes are available now at Nike.com for $180.
Bradley Cooper, David Beckham and Anna Wintour were in the crowd Wednesday during Federer’s match.
On Thursday, Venus and Serena Williams will take the court in Nike in their semifinals match as they look to continue their march to the finals.
