Laceless sneakers seem to be making a comeback. On the heels of Nike unveiling its auto-lacing kicks, Puma recently reimagined its classic Disc dial technology on lifestyle sneakers hitting stores this month.

And its elite runners will be sporting the technology on performance kicks, too.

Puma announced that its roster of athletes — including “World’s Fastest Man” Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Andre de Grasse — will be wearing the new Ignite Disc running shoe and EvoSpeed Disc Spike racing flat, featuring the Disc dial system.

The Ignite Disc style comes equipped with the brand’s proprietary Ignite Foam midsole, intended to provide superior energy return and exceptional cushioning. It’s available now for $130.

The racing flat, meanwhile, features a full-length Pebax Sprint Plate with eight spike receptacles and a soft, aerodynamic Clarino synthetic upper. That shoe is priced at $120.

In a statement from Puma, Bolt said, “I’m all about speed, and the EvoSpeed Disc Spike gives the most comfortable fit in the quickest time. Whether on track or during training, every second is important, so I’m very pleased that with just a quick turn of the Disc, the spike is secure, comfortable and ready to run.”

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Puma’s Disc technology, which was considered revolutionary when it debuted in 1991. The system consists of an internal wire system that tightens the upper with a twist of the dial.

(A similar concept is now widely used by Boa Technology on snowboard boots, hikers and sneakers.)
